Registered Nurse – SICU Nurse

A Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) Nurse specializes in the care of patients who are in critical condition following major invasive surgeries. Unlike general ICU patients, SICU patients often require complex wound management, hemodynamic monitoring, and rapid recovery protocols to prevent post-operative complications.

Job Overview

The SICU Nurse provides 24/7 high-acuity care for post-surgical patients (e.g., cardiothoracic, neurosurgery, transplant, or trauma surgery). Your primary goal is to manage the transition from the operating room to stability, monitoring for hemorrhage, sepsis, or organ failure, and managing advanced life-support systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advanced Post-Operative Monitoring
  • Monitor hemodynamic stability using arterial lines, Central Venous Pressure (CVP) lines, and Swan-Ganz catheters.
  • Titrate complex vasoactive drip medications (e.g., norepinephrine, dopamine) to maintain target blood pressure.
  • Perform frequent neurological checks for post-neurosurgery patients and hourly intake/output (I&O) tracking.
  • Respiratory & Ventilator Management
  • Manage patients on mechanical ventilation, including weaning protocols and extubation readiness assessments.
  • Perform tracheal suctioning and monitor arterial blood gas (ABG) results to adjust ventilator settings in collaboration with respiratory therapists.
  • Wound & Drain Care
  • Assess surgical sites for signs of infection, dehiscence, or hematoma.
  • Manage specialized surgical drains (Jackson-Pratt, Penrose, Chest Tubes) and record output characteristics.
  • Administer complex wound care and negative pressure wound therapy (Wound Vacs).
  • Pain & Sedation Management
  • Administer and monitor Patient-Controlled Analgesia (PCA) pumps and epidural infusions.
  • Use standardized scales (like RASS or CPOT) to assess and manage sedation and agitation levels.

Required Qualifications & SkillsCategoryRequirements

Education: Bsc Nursing / GNM

Licensure: KNC

Mandatory Certs : BLS and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support).Advanced CertsCCRN (Critical Care Registered Nurse) is a major plus.

Experience : 3 - 7 years of experience in an ICU or a high-volume Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).

  • Hyper-Vigilance: Noticing subtle changes in a patient's status before they become a crisis.
  • Collaboration: Working closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and intensivists.
  • Family Support: Communicating complex medical updates to anxious family members in a compassionate manner.
