Your role and responsibilities

The Quality and Safety Lead is responsible for establishing, maintaining, and continuously improving ABB's Quality Management System (QMS) and Functional Safety Management System (FSMS) within the R&D Lab. This role serves as an individual contributor with deep technical expertise in functional safety (IEC 61508/61511), quality management (ISO 9001/27001), and continuous improvement methodologies (Six Sigma). The incumbent will work closely with the R&D Team and Central Quality Team to embed quality and safety into the product development lifecycle, ensuring compliance with international standards and alignment with ABB's core values of safety, integrity, and operational excellence.

The work model for the role is: Hybrid


This role is contributing to the Process Control Platform (PCP) / Operations R&D division in India. Main stakeholders are Product Management, UX/UI teams, QA, DevOps, System Engineers, and global R&D teams.

You will be mainly accountable for:

  • Lead the design, implementation, and governance of Quality Management System (QMS) and Functional Safety Management System (FSMS) aligned with ISO 9001, IEC 61508, and IEC 61511 standards, ensuring robust documentation, compliance, and system integrity.
  • Drive internal and external audits, regulatory compliance, CAPA processes, and risk assessments (FMEA, FSA), ensuring timely closure of nonconformances and maintaining audit readiness at all times.
  • Lead Six Sigma and continuous improvement initiatives using DMAIC methodology, establish KPIs, optimize processes, and eliminate inefficiencies to enhance quality, safety, and operational performance.
  • Develop and deliver training programs on quality and safety standards, promote awareness, and foster a strong safety-first culture across the R&D Lab through structured communication and engagement.
  • Collaborate with R&D, central quality teams, and external stakeholders to integrate quality and safety into product development, while maintaining comprehensive documentation, safety cases, and regulatory records

Qualifications for the role:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Quality Management, Safety Engineering, or a related field alternatively, a High School diploma with 7+ years of relevant experience in quality or safety management.
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in Quality Management and/or Functional Safety Management, including exposure to QMS (ISO 9001), functional safety (IEC 61508/61511), industrial environments, and product development lifecycle.
  • Strong hands-on experience in risk assessment and safety methodologies such as FMEA, FSA, and audit planning, execution, and CAPA management.
  • In-depth knowledge of functional safety standards (IEC 61508, IEC 61511), quality standards (ISO 9001, ISO 27001), and their application in safety-critical and regulated environments.
  • Expertise in process improvement methodologies including Six Sigma (DMAIC), Lean practices, and continuous improvement frameworks to drive operational excellence.
  • Proficiency in documentation, compliance, and project management practices, including QMS/FSMS documentation, V-Model, Agile methodologies, and integration of quality and safety into development processes.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and analytical skills with high attention to detail, ability to manage multiple priorities, influence stakeholders, and demonstrate integrity, adaptability, and a proactive approach to quality and safety.
