The Enterprise Design & Research (EDR) team leads the global design of American Express customer, partner, and colleague experiences across web, mobile apps, and communication channels such as SMS and email. Our teams partner closely with product, engineering, and business leaders to create experiences that drive meaningful value for both our customers and our business.

Within EDR, the Design Experience Frameworks (DXF) team focuses on building scalable design solutions that power critical enterprise capabilities across American Express.


About the Role

DXF is seeking a Director, Product Design to lead design for a portfolio of enterprise data platforms used by colleagues across American Express.

These platforms enable teams across engineering, analytics, risk, and operations to ingest, manage, govern, and activate data across the enterprise. The experiences we design directly impact how thousands of colleagues work with data every day.

This role will:

  • Lead a team of 4-7 product designers based in Gurgaon
  • Shape the experience strategy for complex internal platforms
  • Partner closely with product and engineering leaders across the organization
  • Collaborate with design leaders globally to scale design excellence across the enterprise

Responsibilities

People Leadership

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of 4-7 product designers across multiple experience levels
  • Build a strong design culture focused on craft excellence, collaboration, and continuous learning
  • Recruit and hire exceptional design talent as the team grows
  • Provide ongoing coaching, performance feedback, and career development support
  • Create opportunities for designers to expand their impact and grow into future leaders
  • Establish design practices that improve quality, efficiency, and collaboration across the team

Product Strategy & Experience Leadership

  • Define and drive the experience strategy for enterprise data platforms
  • Ensure a user-centered design approach grounded in research, analytics, and real-world usage
  • Shape product vision and experience direction in close partnership with product and engineering leaders
  • Balance long-term platform vision with near-term delivery milestones
  • Drive UX consistency and quality across complex internal tools and workflows
  • Leverage and contribute to enterprise design systems and platform UX patterns
  • Prioritize design investments across a portfolio of initiatives and products

Cross-Functional Leadership & Influence

  • Build strong partnerships with leaders across Product, Engineering, Data, and Business teams
  • Advocate for the value of design by connecting user experience improvements to business outcomes
  • Facilitate alignment across cross-functional stakeholders on product strategy and priorities
  • Represent the design organization in leadership discussions and strategic planning
  • Partner with global design leaders to advance design maturity across the enterprise

Qualifications

Required Experience

  • 8+ years of experience in digital product design
  • 3+ years of experience leading and developing designers
  • Proven success delivering complex digital products or enterprise platforms
  • Strong expertise in product and UX design
  • Experience collaborating closely with product managers and engineering leaders
  • Excellent communication, storytelling, and stakeholder management skills
  • Experience working within cross-functional product development environments
  • Familiarity with Agile product development practices

Preferred Experience

  • Experience designing enterprise platforms, internal tools, or data systems
  • Experience working in large, global organizations
  • Experience designing products within regulated industries (financial services, healthcare, etc.)
  • Experience leveraging design systems and platform UX frameworks
  • Experience working with distributed or globally located design teams
