Structural Engineer Modular Construction
Join a Team Engineering the Future of Construction
Office Location: IITM Research Park, Taramani, Chennai
The Role
As a Structural Engineer, you will contribute to the design and analysis of PEB steel structures, LGSF systems, and RCC in compliance with relevant Indian Standard (IS) codes. You will support the development of industrialized and modular construction solutions while ensuring designs follow Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) principles.
You will work closely with senior engineers, architects, IITM collaborators, and supply chain teams to develop efficient, scalable structural systems that support prefabrication, minimum-skill manufacturing, and streamlined on-site erection.
Key ResponsibilitiesDesign and Analysis
- Design of PEB steel structures, RCC , and LGSF(Cold formed Steel) design for modular buildings following IS codes (e.g., IS 800, IS 456, IS 875).
- Perform structural analysis using software such as STAAD Pro, ETABS, and AutoCAD.
- Support the application of industrialized construction principles to optimize designs for fabrication and assembly.
- Assist in developing 3D structural models using BIM tools.
- Collaborate with architects and engineering teams to integrate structural design with the overall building system.
Design for Manufacturability & Assembly (DFMA)
- Support implementation of DFMA principles to reduce site complexity and improve prefabrication efficiency.
- Work with procurement teams to help identify industry-standard materials suitable for fabrication and modular construction.
- Assist in optimizing designs for ease of manufacturing and installation.
Structural Bill of Materials (BOM) & Construction Documentation
- Support preparation of structural quantity estimates including superstructure steel quantities and foundation requirements.
- Assist in developing structural Bills of Materials (BOM) for steel and RCC components.
- Prepare structural drawings, fabrication drawings, and shop drawings for construction and manufacturing guidance.
Pre-Fabrication Quality Support
Structural Engineering Documentation
- Assist in preparing structural design documents for review and approval by IIT Madras or other designated authorities.
- Support revisions and updates based on review comments.
Material Quality
- Specify steel grades and standards as per applicable IS codes.
- Assist in reviewing mill certificates and material compliance documents.
Fabrication Drawings
- Support development of fabrication drawings showing:
- Dimensions and tolerances
- Bolt-hole locations
- Weld specifications
- Surface treatments (galvanization, painting)
Erection Support & Site Coordination
Erection Drawings
- Work with BIM engineers to support preparation of erection drawings and sequencing plans.
Site Coordination
- Assist in site inspections during erection to ensure structural drawings are followed.
- Monitor critical aspects including:
- Foundation readiness
- Column alignment
- Structural connections
- Bolt tightening procedures
Quality Documentation
- Assist in maintaining documentation of site inspections, weld certifications, and corrective actions.
Construction Methodology Support
- Contribute to development of efficient prefab construction methods.
- Support efforts toward standardization of modular construction systems.
- Assist in documenting best practices and lessons learned for future projects.
Collaboration and Communication
- Work closely with architects, MEP engineers, procurement teams, and project managers.
- Participate in design and coordination meetings.
- Maintain clear communication within the project team to support smooth execution.
