The Senior Director will provide overall leadership, strategic direction, and accountability for large-scale Critical Risk Management (CRM) and safety culture transformation programmes for metals and mining clients. This includes leading complex, multi-site and multi-year engagements aimed at delivering sustained improvements in safety performance.
This role is responsible for translating CRM frameworks into operational reality, ensuring that fatal and serious injury risks are effectively controlled through strong leadership behaviours, disciplined implementation of critical controls, and robust governance mechanisms.
Key Responsibilities
Programme leadership & client stewardship
- Lead complex, multisite CRM and safety transformation programmes for major metals and mining clients
- Act as the senior client advisor to executive leadership, Boards, and corporate safety councils
- Build and maintain trusted relationships with CXOs, site leaders, and functional heads
- Represent ERM as a thought leader in fatal risk prevention and critical control management
Strategic design & application of CRM
- Apply ICMMaligned Critical Control Management (CCM) principles as a practical roadmap, not a theoretical model
- Guide sequencing of interventions based on maturity, risk exposure, and operational readiness
- Ensure CRM is embedded into work processes, leadership routines, and decisionmaking under pressure
- Prevent overengineering by maintaining focus on what materially reduces fatal risk
Leadership, culture, and governance
- Shape leadership expectations and behaviors related to fatal risk ownership
- Support clients in moving from compliancedriven safety to lineowned risk accountability
- Design and oversee governance, assurance, and performance review mechanisms
- Provide independent challenge to senior leaders where control effectiveness is weak
Team leadership & quality assurance
- Lead and mentor programme managers, technical specialists, and sitebased experts
- Set technical standards and ensure consistency of delivery across sites and geographies
- Own overall programme quality, outcomes, and risk management
- Contribute to ERM's global CRM capability building and methodology development
Essential
Experience and background
- 15+ years of experience in safety, risk management, or operational risk within metals and mining
- Demonstrated leadership of largescale safety or CRM transformations, preferably across multiple sites
- Strong understanding of fatal risk management, critical controls, and verification discipline
- Proven ability to engage credibly with Boards, EXCO, and senior operational leaders
- Experience working in or with international mining operations
Highly desirable
- Direct experience applying ICMM CCM / CRM frameworks
- Background in underground or complex mining environments
- Experience in consulting or advisory roles alongside operational leadership experience
What success looks like
- Clients trust ERM to handle their most material safety risks
- CRM becomes embedded as an operational discipline, not a parallel safety programme
- Leadership behavior and decisionmaking visibly shift under pressure
- Sustained reduction in fatal and serious injury exposure
