The Role

As a Lead Mechanical Engineer at Convergix, you will lead the frontend engineering for BIW automation projectstranslating customer specifications into robust concept designs for fixtures, grippers, framing systems, EOAT, and stations (Geo/Respot/Framers). You will own feasibility, layout, and design intent, to allow downstream detailed design engineers to reliably execute.

Key Responsibilities

  • Interpret OEM and Tier1 standards (e.g., GM GSS, Ford STA, VW, Stellantis) and customer RFQs into functional design concepts.
  • Develop 3D concept layouts and envelope studies for BIW stations: locating schemes, clamping strategies, gun access, robot reach, and cycle-time assumptions.
  • Define datum strategies (321), clamping sequences, pin/locator strategy, and errorproofing concepts.
  • Conduct feasibility: robot reach and interference, weld gun access, maintenance/service access, ergonomics, and operator safety considerations.
  • Collaborate with Process, Simulation, Controls, and Robotics to align tooling concepts with throughput, cable routing, utilities, and controls philosophy.
  • Estimate concept BOM and provide indicative cost/leadtime assumptions for bid or internal gate reviews.
  • Present concepts to stakeholders; refine based on DFMEA, risk reviews, and design gates.
  • Handover to detailed design with clear design intent (notes, markups, criteria, and standards).
  • Participate in design reviews or virtual meetings with clientsespecially those in North Americato present solutions and gather feedback.
  • Guide junior engineers, share best practices, and explore new automation trends or design techniques.
  • Stay curious keeping abreast of new automation technologies, robotic systems, or global standards to stay ahead of the curve.

Qualifications And Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering (or related field).
  • 10+ years of hands-on experience in BIW tooling and assembly process and system design
  • Experience working with North American OEMs General Motors is highly preferred
  • Excellent knowledge of GD&T, manufacturing process, BOM, DFM and DFA
  • High level of proficiency in NX Design, modelling and drawings with KBTD GM Toolkit
  • Proven track record of owning complete project execution from concept to delivery
  • Experience leading design presentations and reviews and buyoff approvals with customers
  • Strong understanding of lean manufacturing concepts and tools
  • Experience collaborating with Process Engineering, Simulation and Robotics team
  • Knowledge in weld gun and long lead equipment buy off process and approval

Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to feel objects, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, talk and hear.
  • Specific vision abilities required for the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds
