Job Description: Lead Product Designer

Location: Bengaluru | Team: Product | Experience: 7-10 years

About SolarSquare

SolarSquare is India's largest and fastest-growing residential rooftop solar company. We are on a mission to make solar simple, safe, and reliable for every Indian home - powering the country's transition to independent clean energy.

Recognized by the World Economic Forum (Technology Pioneers 2025), TIME & Statista's World's Top GreenTech Companies, and Forbes Top 100 To Watch, SolarSquare is helping shape the future of home energy in India.

The Role

As Lead Product Designer, you will be responsible for raising the quality, consistency, and effectiveness of product design across SolarSquare's entire product surface area. This is a player-coach role - as the first dedicated design leader at SolarSquare, you will lead and develop designers while remaining hands-on as an individual contributor on high-impact problem areas.

Your scope spans SolarSquare's full product surface - customer-facing journeys (acquisition, onboarding, CX app) and internal workflow-heavy products used by sales, operations, and field teams. Design decisions here directly affect how field operators work, how customers experience their energy journey, and how product teams frame and solve problems.

You will establish research as a core practice, build practical design rituals that raise output quality

without slowing delivery, and partner closely with product leadership to shape how design works at SSE. This role is designed for someone who enjoys being close to the work and raising quality through craft and judgment.

Scope of Responsibility

Own design quality and consistency across SSE's full product breadth - customer journeys,

acquisition and onboarding flows, internal operator tools, sales and ops execution, and

field-facing applications.

Lead, mentor, and review the work of a small team of designers - set clear quality standards,

provide hands-on guidance, and build a high-bar design culture from the ground up.

Act as an individual contributor on complex or high-impact problem areas - own design

end-to-end and set the bar through example.

Establish user research as a core practice, including methods suited to non-desk users - field

observation, workflow shadowing, and contextual inquiry with operators and ground teams.

Partner with PMs upstream in problem discovery - shape problem statements and workflow logic

before screens are designed, not after.

Establish practical design rituals - reviews, critiques, handoffs, that improve output quality

without creating overhead.

Mature and evolve SSE's design system, starting from a basic external-agency foundation and

iterating toward greater consistency and reuse.

Drive design UAT and own the gap between design intent and what ships.

Bring AI tools into the design workflow to accelerate iteration, generate rapid variants, and

synthesise research at scale - and coach the team to build the same fluency.

What Success Requires

7-10 years of product design experience, with at least 2-3 yrs experience managing or mentoring junior designers.

Strong design fundamentals across both consumer-facing experiences and internal or

workflow-heavy products - comfort switching contexts and knowing what each requires.

A track record of raising design quality and building design systems in fast-moving environments where processes and inputs are still evolving.

Functional design instinct - designs for workflows, task efficiency, and decision support, and not

just visual quality.

Specific experience designing for non-desk, operator, or field-force users - logistics, field services, manufacturing, healthcare operations, or similar.

Comfort with low-fidelity, high-speed prototyping - knows when to sketch and test vs. when to

invest in polish, and defaults to the former.

Familiarity with AI design tools and a genuine interest in building AI-first workflows within the

team - not just personally fluent, but able to bring others along.

Ability to hold their ground on design decisions with PMs, engineers, and senior stakeholders

without relying on positional authority.

Collaborative, low-ego working style that builds trust quickly in a cross-functional environment.
