Job Description

The Head of Sports is responsible for leading and developing a high-quality physical education and sports programme across the school. The role focuses on curriculum leadership, sports enrichment, student wellbeing, and fostering a culture of lifelong fitness and participation. The Head of Sports works closely with school leadership, teachers, coaches, and external partners to ensure inclusive, safe, and engaging sports experiences for all students

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning, development, and implementation of a whole-school Physical Education and Sports curriculum aligned with the IB philosophy and learner profile.
  • Ensure age-appropriate, inclusive, and progressive physical education programmes across grade levels.
  • Oversee extracurricular sports programmes, inter-house activities, tournaments, and competitive and non-competitive sporting opportunities.
  • Provide instructional leadership and act as a professional role model through effective teaching and coaching practices.
  • Lead, manage, and support PE teachers, coaches, and trainers through guidance, mentoring, and professional development.
  • Coordinate sports schedules, fixtures, competitions, and sports days in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Manage school sports facilities, equipment, and resources to ensure safety, optimal usage, and maintenance.
  • Promote student wellbeing, fitness, teamwork, sportsmanship, and resilience through structured programmes.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with sports organisations, academies, and external agencies to enhance learning opportunities.
  • Support talent identification and performance pathways while encouraging participation at all ability levels.
  • Ensure adherence to safety standards, safeguarding policies, and risk assessments for all sports activities.
  • Represent the sports department in leadership meetings and contribute to whole-school planning and initiatives.
  • Support school events related to sports, fitness, and wellbeing, including assemblies, celebrations, and exhibitions.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, records, and reports related to sports programmes and student participation.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 15–18 years of experience in teaching Physical Education and sports programmes.
  • At least 5 years of leadership or coordination experience in a school or educational setting.
  • Experience working in an international or IB school environment is an added advantage.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing sports teams, facilities, events, and competitions.
