About Hygenco
Hygenco is India's pioneering green hydrogen company, committed to accelerating the nation's clean energy transition. We develop, own, and operate green hydrogen and green ammonia projects at scale, supplying industrial customers with cost-competitive, zero-carbon hydrogen produced entirely from renewable energy sources.
As part of our next phase of growth, Hygenco is pursuing vertical integration into alkaline electrolyser manufacturing to secure a reliable, cost-competitive supply of electrolysers for its own projects. This programme begins with licensed technology from a world-class international licensor and process skid engineering performed locally — with a deliberate roadmap to progressively localise the full electrolyser system, including the stack, over time. Our manufacturing strategy is anchored on deep technology absorption, Indian supply chain development, and building in-house engineering capability that reduces dependence on imports.
Role Overview
The Head of Engineering is a senior leadership role at the intersection of technology, manufacturing, and supply chain. The incumbent will own the entire engineering function for Hygenco's electrolyser manufacturing programme — from technology absorption and India-specific adaptation through to system integration, commissioning, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
1. Technology Absorption & Localisation
- Lead end-to-end technology transfer from the international licensor; build and document internal engineering know-how and design standards.
- Establish engineering procedures and technical specifications aligned with licensor requirements and Indian regulatory norms.
- Drive progressive localisation of engineering knowledge, reducing routine dependence on the licensor over time.
- Protect and manage technical IP in line with the licence agreement and confidentiality obligations.
2. India-Specific Engineering & Adaptation
- Adapt process skid designs for Indian grid conditions, utility standards (IS codes), ambient environment, and seismic/climatic zoning.
- Ensure compliance with applicable Indian regulations: PESO (Dept. of Explosives), CEA electrical standards, PCB/pollution norms, and applicable factory/safety acts.
- Develop and own P&IDs, PFDs, equipment datasheets, and cause-and-effect matrices for the integrated system.
- Conduct HAZOP, FMEA, and safety reviews; maintain the safety case throughout the product lifecycle.
3. System Integration & Manufacturing
- Oversee mechanical, electrical, and I&C integration of process skids and sub-systems into a complete electrolyser package.
- Define and execute Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) protocols.
- Establish quality management processes for assembly, integration, and testing in line with ISO 9001 / IEC standards.
4. Supply Chain & Vendor Development
- Identify, pre-qualify, and develop Indian vendors for components: piping, valves, heat exchangers, electrical panels, and instrumentation.
- Build vendor qualification frameworks; conduct technical audits and manage Approved Vendor Lists (AVL).
- Drive import substitution programmes to improve cost competitiveness and supply chain resilience.
- Collaborate with procurement on RFQ specifications, technical bid evaluations, and supplier contracts.
5. Engineering Team Leadership
- Build, lead, and mentor a multidisciplinary engineering team spanning process, mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation & controls disciplines.
- Set team objectives, manage engineering resource planning, and own the engineering function's budget.
- Serve as the primary technical interface with the licensor, EPC contractors, and key customers; build relationships with global electrolyser technology partners to support the localisation roadmap.
- Represent Hygenco in technical forums, standards bodies, and regulatory engagements as required.
