Job Description

Key Responsibilities

1. Surgical Care

  • Perform general surgical procedures such as:
  • Appendectomy, cholecystectomy, hernia repair, GI surgeries
  • Breast and thyroid surgeries
  • Hemorrhoidectomy, fistulectomy, and other anorectal procedures
  • Trauma and emergency abdominal surgeries
  • Utilize laparoscopic/minimally invasive techniques where applicable.
  • Ensure aseptic techniques and compliance with OT protocols.
  • Supervise surgical residents and OT staff during procedures.

2. Pre-Operative & Post-Operative Management

  • Conduct thorough patient assessments and obtain informed consent.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests, imaging, and labs.
  • Develop individualized surgical plans with risk stratification.
  • Manage pain control, wound care, and complication prevention post-surgery.
  • Coordinate with ICU, anesthesiology, and other specialties for perioperative care.

3. Emergency Services

  • Respond promptly to trauma and acute abdominal cases in the ER.
  • Perform life-saving interventions (e.g., exploratory laparotomy, control of hemorrhage).
  • Be available for on-call duties as per rotation schedule.

4. Academic & Teaching(If applicable)

  • Conduct lectures, seminars, and practical training for MBBS and PG (MS/DNB) students.
  • Supervise clinical postings, surgical case presentations, and ward rounds.
  • Guide residents in research, thesis work, and skills development.
  • Participate in departmental CME, conferences, and workshops.

5. Administrative & Quality Responsibilities

  • Maintain meticulous surgical notes and records.
  • Participate in morbidity and mortality meetings, audits, and SOP development.
  • Ensure compliance with medico-legal protocols and documentation.
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and patient safety programs.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • MBBS + MS / DNB in General Surgery
  • Valid registration with State or National Medical Council

Desirable:

  • Fellowship in Laparoscopic Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Breast Surgery, etc.
  • Experience in trauma or emergency surgery
  • Teaching experience (for academic institutions)

  • Proficiency in open and laparoscopic surgical techniques
  • Strong clinical judgment and decision-making under pressure
  • Excellent communication and patient counseling skills
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams
  • Teaching and mentorship abilities (if applicable)
  • Attention to detail and safety in operative care
