Job Purpose

The Mechanical Drive Train Engineer is responsible for executing the design, testing, and validation of mechanical components within the drive train system, such as main shafts, bearings, and couplings. Utilizing CAD tools (e.g., CATIA, NX) and basic FEA techniques, the Engineer ensures that designs meet structural, thermal, and fatigue requirements. This role supports testing activities, collects and analyzes performance data, and provides hands-on assistance during component assembly and site troubleshooting. The Engineer also participates in root cause analysis of component failures, material selection, and compliance checks against industry standards. By contributing to continuous improvement initiatives, the Mechanical Drive Train Engineer helps optimize designs and manufacturing processes, enhancing the overall reliability and performance of wind turbine systems.

Responsibilities

Design Execution and Drafting

  • Execute the design of mechanical drive train components, including main shafts, bearings, gearboxes, and couplings, using CAD software (e.g., CATIA, NX).
  • Ensure designs comply with stress, fatigue, and thermal requirements, conducting basic FEA to validate design integrity, particularly for high-load components like main bearings.

Component Testing and Validation

  • Participate in component testing, including fatigue testing, gear meshing analysis, and noise/vibration assessments to validate the performance of critical components like gearboxes and couplings.
  • Collect and analyze data during testing phases, identifying discrepancies between expected and actual performance and suggesting corrective actions.

Technical Support in Manufacturing

  • Provide hands-on support during the manufacturing and assembly of drive train components, resolving engineering challenges related to fit, alignment, and part integration, especially for gearboxes and shafts.
  • Assist in the development of assembly instructions, ensuring accurate alignment of drive train components for optimal performance.

Problem Solving and Site Troubleshooting

  • Assist in site troubleshooting and diagnostics, applying engineering principles to resolve performance issues with components like main shafts, gearboxes, and bearings.
  • Conduct initial root cause analysis on-site, documenting findings and recommending design or process changes to prevent recurrence.

Material Selection and Analysis

  • Evaluate material properties and select appropriate materials for drive train components, considering factors such as load, wear resistance, and thermal conductivity, particularly for high-stress components.
  • Assist in material testing and analysis, including hardness testing, tensile testing, and metallurgical evaluations.

Compliance and Standards Adherence

  • Ensure all engineering work aligns with relevant industry standards, including ISO, ANSI, and company-specific design guidelines.
  • Maintain awareness of the latest standards and regulatory changes, updating designs and processes as required.

Adherence to Policies and Ethical Considerations

  • Adhere to organizational policies and ethical standards in all engineering activities, ensuring transparency and integrity in design, testing, and manufacturing processes.
  • Participate in training on corporate policies, ethics, and compliance to maintain high professional standards.

Continuous Improvement and Learning

  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, suggesting enhancements to design methodologies, testing protocols, and production processes.
  • Engage in professional development activities, including training on new engineering tools, industry trends, and emerging technologies in drive train design.

Key Stakeholders - Internal

  • Head - Mechanical Engineering
  • Lead - Mechanical Drive Train
  • Manufacturing Teams
  • QA Teams

Key Stakeholders - External

  • Material Testing Laboratories

Qualifications

Educational Background:

  • BE in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.

Work Experience

  • 3-5 years experience in executing component design, testing, and on-site troubleshooting of mechanical systems in turbine operations.

Industry Knowledge

  • Understanding of CAD tools, material properties, and initial failure analysis, focusing on main shafts, bearings, and gearboxes.
