Town of Sturbridge – Town Planner

The Town of Sturbridge seeks a collaborative, forward-thinking professional to serve as Town Planner beginning July 27, 2026, following the retirement of a long-serving planner after more than two decades of service. This is an exciting opportunity to guide planning initiatives in a vibrant New England community known for its historic character, natural resources, and strong civic engagement. The Town Planner is responsible for performing professional, supervisory and administrative work in managing the operations of the Town's Planning Department, provides professional guidance to related permitting and regulatory boards including the Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, Design Review Committee, Historical Commission, and Affordable Housing Trust. Responsibilities include managing development review processes, preparing and implementing planning and housing initiatives, drafting zoning bylaws and regulations, coordinating long-range planning efforts, and administering the town's geographic information system and serving as floodplain administrator. The Town Planner also seeks and administers grants and appropriate. The position also oversees updates to planning documents such as master plans, housing plans, and open space and recreation plans. The next Town Planner will have the opportunity to build upon a strong planning foundation and help guide the Town's thoughtful growth while preserving its rural character and historic resources. The Town Planner reports directly to the Town Administrator and supervises a full time Administrative Assistant and a part time Housing Coordinator. Qualifications
The ideal candidate will be an experienced planning professional with strong communication skills, sound judgment, and a collaborative leadership style. Master's degree (M.A.) in planning, public administration or related field; and seven to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of Massachusetts land use law, zoning, subdivision regulations, and permitting processes required. Strong communication, project management, and public engagement skills required. Compensation: Salary range $89,069 – $124,696. DOQ, with a comprehensive municipal benefits package.
