Job Description

Job Summary

Under limited supervision, the Toolmaker constructs intricate injection molding tools, jigs, fixtures, punches, molds, gauges, and dies to extremely close tolerances. The role involves working from drawings, sketches, models, or verbal instructions and selecting the most economical machining methods. The Toolmaker may assign machining tasks to machinists, create sketches for subassemblies, assist with work scheduling, and serve as a group leader when required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Construct and repair machine shop tools, gauges, fixtures, jigs, or dies for in-house use.
  • Perform tasks ranging from basic tool room operations to work involving extremely precise tolerances.
  • Plan construction methods and procedures, including material selection.
  • Account for shrinkage in heat-treated tools and metal flow in dies.
  • Lay out, fabricate, and assemble dies, molds, and fixtures based on blueprints, sketches, and specifications.
  • Use machinist hand tools and precision measuring instruments effectively.
  • Compute dimensions and determine machining/material requirements.
  • Perform precision work to exact tolerances and dimensions.
  • Recommend design revisions or material substitutions to resolve fabrication issues.
  • Solve problems related to unusual materials, work-holding, machine settings, and production processes.
  • Monitor and verify quality using statistical process control or other procedures.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior toolmakers.
  • Support all company safety and quality programs and initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications

Knowledge Requirements:

  • Ability to read/write English and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, blueprints, and manuals.
  • Strong basic math skills and ability to follow and execute work instructions.
  • Proficiency with machinist tools and precision measuring equipment.

Skills Required:

  • Injection Molding Background is MANDATORY

Experience:

  • 2 to 7 years of relevant experience.
