JD for COBOL developer

Required Technical Skills

  • Strong hands-on experience with COBOL, Micro Focus COBOL, CICS, JCL, and Oracle in a Red Hat Linux environment.
  • Experience designing, developing, and consuming SOAP/REST web services and working with microservices-based architectures.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues and quickly learn new technologies.
  • Proficient in developing and optimizing complex SQL queries and database operations.
  • Hands-on experience with Micro Focus Net Express (IDE) and Red Hat Linux operating systems.
  • Experience developing or supporting Pharmacy Benefit Management (PBM) applications is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of JCL, batch processing, job scheduling, and production support.
  • Experience working with VSAM, flat files, Oracle databases, and other relational database management systems.
  • Good knowledge of mainframe utilities, including SORT, IDCAMS, IEBGENER, IEFBR14, and related tools.
  • Strong understanding of COBOL copybooks, file layouts, data structures, and data transformation processes.
  • Ability to analyze business and technical requirements, review RFPs, collaborate with stakeholders, prepare technical designs, provide effort estimates, and support proposal development.
  • Develop, unit test, and deliver high-quality software solutions that meet functional and technical requirements.
  • Expertise in debugging, troubleshooting, and resolving issues within large-scale, enterprise mainframe applications.

Additional Technical Skills for D0 to F6 Conversion

  • Extensive experience implementing field length changes in legacy mainframe applications during data format conversion initiatives.
  • Strong expertise in analyzing and modifying COBOL copybooks, file layouts, and record structures to accommodate field size increases or decreases.
  • Ability to identify and remediate field length dependencies across:
    • COBOL data definitions (PIC clauses, REDEFINES)
    • Relational database schemas (Oracle, DB2, or equivalent)
    • VSAM datasets and flat file record layouts
  • Experience performing comprehensive impact analysis for field size changes across:
    • Input and output interfaces
    • Upstream and downstream applications
    • Batch processes and data integration workflows
  • Proficient in validating field length modifications through:
    • Unit testing
    • System and regression testing
    • Parallel run validation and comparison of legacy versus converted data
  • Strong debugging and data validation skills using File-AID, SORT utilities, dump analysis, and other mainframe diagnostic tools to ensure data integrity and application stability following conversion changes.
