Technical Business Plan Writer

We're looking for a Technical Business Plan Writer to translate complex technical concepts, products, and services into clear, investor-ready business plans. You'll partner with founders, engineers, and subject-matter experts to produce rigorous, well-researched documents that support fundraising, grant applications, internal strategy, and regulatory submissions. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable interpreting a technical architecture diagram and modeling a five-year revenue forecast.

Key Responsibilities

Research, draft, edit, and finalize comprehensive business plans for technology-driven companies across sectors such as SaaS, fintech, biotech, clean energy, hardware, and deep tech.

Interview founders, CTOs, and technical staff to extract product details, competitive differentiators, IP position, and development roadmaps, then render them in accessible prose for non-technical audiences (investors, lenders, grant reviewers).

Conduct primary and secondary market research, including TAM/SAM/SOM sizing, competitive landscape analysis, regulatory scans, and customer validation synthesis.

Build and review supporting financial models: revenue projections, unit economics, burn/runway analysis, cap tables, and sensitivity scenarios (in partnership with finance staff or independently).

Structure plans to meet the conventions of the intended audience — SBA loan packages, venture capital pitches, SBIR/STTR and other grant applications, incubator submissions, or internal board documents.

Produce companion deliverables: executive summaries, one-pagers, pitch decks, investor FAQs, and technical white papers.

Ensure claims are defensible, sources are cited, assumptions are transparent, and financial logic is internally consistent.

Manage multiple client engagements or internal projects simultaneously, meeting tight deadlines without sacrificing quality.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in business, engineering, economics, finance, a STEM field, or equivalent experience.

3+ years of experience writing business plans, investment memos, grant proposals, consulting reports, or comparable long-form analytical documents.

Demonstrated ability to read and interpret technical material — product specs, patents, scientific papers, or software documentation — and explain it accurately in plain language.

Strong command of financial fundamentals: income statements, cash flow, balance sheets, and standard startup/SMB financial models.

Excellent written English with a portfolio of published or confidential work samples available on request.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office (especially Word and Excel) or Google Workspace equivalents.

Preferred Qualifications

MBA, master's degree in a technical field, or CFA progress.

Experience writing for specific audiences: SBA lenders, angel/VC investors, NIH/NSF/DoE grant programs, or corporate strategy teams.

Background in a technical discipline (software engineering, life sciences, hardware, energy) sufficient to challenge or refine founders assumptions.

Familiarity with tools such as LivePlan, PitchBook, CB Insights, Crunchbase, Statista, and financial modeling add-ins.

Experience working with early-stage founders, accelerators, or economic development organizations.

Strong analytical judgment — knows the difference between a realistic projection and an aspirational one, and can push back diplomatically.

Meticulous attention to detail, particularly around numbers, sources, and claims.

Discretion with confidential technical and financial information; willingness to sign NDAs.
