Job Description Systems Database Administrator (DBA)

Position Summary

The Systems Database Administrator (DBA) will be responsible for installing, configuring, maintaining, and securing enterprise database platforms that are critical to business operations. This role requires ensuring high availability, robust data protection, optimal performance, and compliance with organizational and regulatory standards. The DBA will collaborate closely with infrastructure, application, and support teams to deliver reliable database services and resolve production incidents efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

Database Installation & Maintenance

  • Install, configure, and maintain SQL Server (or other assigned DB platforms) across environments.
  • Apply patches and version upgrades within compliance timelines.
  • Implement database table partitioning strategies to improve query performance and manage large datasets efficiently.
  • Design and manage archival policies for historical/transactional data to optimize storage, ensuring accessibility without impacting production performance Monitor resource utilization and support infrastructure scalability.
  • Achieve 99.9% uptime by proactively managing system availability and stability.

Data Backup & Recovery

  • Implement automated daily database backups aligned with RPO/RTO objectives.
  • Conduct quarterly restore tests to validate recoverability.
  • Manage and test disaster recovery procedures, ensuring business continuity.
  • Performance Monitoring & Tuning.
  • Monitor database performance, query execution plans, and system metrics.
  • Identify bottlenecks, tune indexes, and optimize workloads.
  • Ensure average query response times meet SLA requirements (e.g., < 2 sec for critical queries).

Security & Compliance

  • Manage user roles, permissions, and authentication controls.
  • Implement database encryption, audit trails, and regulatory compliance measures.
  • Conduct quarterly access audits and security reviews, ensuring zero unauthorized access incidents.

Incident & Problem Resolution

  • Monitor support tickets and production alerts for database-related issues.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve incidents within SLA, targeting 95% resolution of priority-1 issues under 4 hours.
  • Maintain Mean Time to Resolution (MTTR) below 24 hours for all database incidents.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain and update database architecture, operational runbooks, and change documents.
  • Submit monthly DBA status and compliance reports by the 5th working day.
  • Update system documentation within 2 days of any approved change.

Learning & Development

  • Stay current on emerging database technologies, cloud DBaaS services, and security best practices.
  • Complete at least one technical training, workshop, or certification annually.
  • Share knowledge within the team through sessions and documentation.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Database uptime percentage (target: 99.9%).
  • Backup success rate and restore test pass rate (target: 100%).
  • SLA compliance for query response times (target: 95%).
  • Security patch compliance rate (target: 100% within 5 days of release).
  • Incident MTTR and SLA adherence.
  • Documentation accuracy and reporting timeliness.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related discipline.
  • 25 years of experience as a Database Administrator (SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, or equivalent).
  • Strong proficiency in database installation, upgrades, and high-availability configurations (AlwaysOn, clustering, replication).
  • Expertise in backup/restore, disaster recovery, and performance optimization techniques.
  • Knowledge of database security, encryption, and compliance practices.
  • Familiarity with monitoring and automation tools (e.g., SQL Server Management Studio, Azure Monitor, or similar).
  • Experience with ITIL incident/problem/change management processes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in enterprise-scale environments (healthcare, supply chain, or financial domains preferred).
  • Working knowledge of cloud database platforms (Azure SQL Database, AWS RDS, GCP Cloud SQL).
  • Relevant certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, Oracle DBA Certified Professional, or equivalent.
