Job Summary
The
Switchyard & Transformer Yard - BTG Maintenance Engineer is responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, and reliability of high-voltage (HV) electrical equipment, including transformers, circuit breakers, isolators, and switchgear in the
Balance of Plant (BOP) and Boiler-Turbine-Generator (BTG) system. The role ensures smooth power evacuation, grid synchronization, and compliance with safety & regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintenance & Troubleshooting:
- Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance of switchyard and transformer yard equipment (220kV/400kV and above).
- Troubleshoot failures in circuit breakers (SF6, VCB, ACB), isolators, CTs, PTs, and surge arresters.
- Diagnose transformer-related issues (oil testing, DGA, bushing monitoring, etc.).
- Ensure effective maintenance of GIS/AIS switchgear and associated protections.
- Coordinate with operations for planned shutdowns & emergency breakdowns.
- Testing & Inspection:
- Conduct routine & special testing of power transformers, OLTC, and protection relays.
- Perform high-voltage equipment testing, including IR, PI, Tan Delta, SFRA, and partial discharge analysis.
- Inspect relay coordination, SCADA/RTU integration, and grid protection schemes.
- Maintain records of test results and equipment history for trend analysis.
- Compliance & Safety:
- Ensure compliance with electrical safety standards (IS, IEC, IEEE).
- Follow LOTO (Lockout-Tagout) procedures during maintenance.
- Coordinate with regulatory authorities (CEA, DISCOMs, SLDC, RLDC) for approvals and inspections.
- Implement reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) & condition-based monitoring (CBM) practices.
- Documentation & Reporting:
- Prepare daily/weekly/monthly maintenance reports.
- Maintain inventory of critical spares & consumables.
- Support RCA (Root Cause Analysis) for equipment failures and suggest improvements.
- Assist in technical audits and third-party inspections.
- Coordination & Team Management:
- Work closely with operation teams for seamless power evacuation.
- Coordinate with OEMs, contractors, and service providers for major overhauls.
- Train junior engineers and technicians on best maintenance practices.
Qualifications & Experience
- Education: B.E./B.Tech in Electrical Engineering or related field.
- Experience: 5-10 years in switchyard, transformer yard, or BTG electrical maintenance (Power Plant / Transmission / Heavy Industry).
- Technical Skills:Expertise in GIS/AIS switchgear, power transformers, & protection systems.
- Knowledge of SCADA, SAS, relay coordination & fault analysis.
- Hands-on experience with testing tools (Omicron, Megger, Doble, etc.).
- Familiarity with grid codes, power evacuation, & synchronization procedures.
- Certifications (Preferred): CEA Certification, Switchyard Operation & Maintenance Training, Relay Testing Certifications.
