About Our Client — Toorak Capital Partners

You will be part of a dedicated engineering team supporting Toorak Capital Partners, a leading U.S.-based integrated correspondent lending platform that funds residential, multifamily, and mixed-use real estate loans across the U.S. and U.K. Headquartered in Summit, New Jersey, Toorak's leadership team brings deep expertise across real estate lending, capital markets, securitization, asset management, and credit. To date, Toorak-funded projects have renovated or stabilized housing for 9,000+ families — averaging 500+ families every month.This is a rare opportunity to build mission-critical, cloud-based mortgage technology platforms that directly support one of the most respected players in the global mortgage finance industry.

This isn't a make it pretty internship.

The platform you'll be designing is used by real people — salaried professionals, small business owners, first-generation homebuyers — who are staking years of savings on a loan application. One confusing screen, one broken flow, one moment of poor judgment in your design, and that person's life gets harder. That is the weight of this work. And that weight is exactly what makes it worth doing.

What the job actually looks like

Most designers spend their first few years waiting for permission to do real work. Here, there is no waiting. From week one, you will be in the room — with engineers, product managers, and business leaders — making actual calls on a live product. You will run research that shifts direction. You will build prototypes that go straight into sprints. You will learn how a mortgage platform works at a systems level, because the best designers in this industry are the ones who understand what's at stake beyond the screen.

Nobody is going to hand you a brief and ask you to make it pretty. You will identify the problem, frame the solution, defend the decision, and own the outcome. That is a different kind of responsibility — and it will make you a different kind of designer.

Who survives here

You have a Bachelor's or Master's in Design, CS, IT, Computer Engineering, or equivalent — and you actually paid attention during the human-computer interaction parts. You know Figma (or Sketch, or InVision) well enough that the tool disappears and only the thinking remains. You understand that user-centered design is a discipline, not a buzzword you put on your resume.

You communicate like an adult. No I'll try — just timelines, tradeoffs, and honest updates. You manage your own time because nobody here will micromanage yours. You have taste, but more importantly, you have judgment — the ability to tell the difference between what looks good and what works.

What you should know before applying

This is a Mortgage/FinTech/Software Platform company. The domain is complex, regulated, and unforgiving. You'll learn more in six months here than most interns learn in two years — but only if you're the kind of person who runs toward hard problems instead of away from them.
