Software Engineer Distributed Systems Storage Protocols
Location: Nasuni IIC Hyderabad, India Hybrid (3 days onsite / 2 days offsite)
Role Overview
Nasuni is hiring a Software Engineer to contribute to the development and modernization of our storage protocol stack within a cloud-native, containerized platform.
This role focuses on building and enhancing backend services that integrate with core file system protocols (NFS, SMB) while developing foundational expertise in distributed systems, Linux environments, and Kubernetes-based infrastructure. You will work closely with senior engineers to implement scalable systems, improve reliability, and support the evolution of legacy components into modern, containerized services.

- Are interested in working closer to the OS, storage, or protocol layers
- Want to grow into distributed systems and cloud-native infrastructure
This is not a fit for engineers focused primarily on frontend development or manual QA.
Level & Scope Definition
- Contribute to the development of protocol and backend service components within a defined subsystem
- Execute on well-scoped tasks with guidance from senior engineers and technical leads
- Participate in design discussions, contributing ideas while building design proficiency
- Develop production-quality code with strong emphasis on testing and maintainability
- Collaborate with Platform, QE, and SRE teams to ensure reliability and observability
- Build foundational expertise in distributed systems, storage protocols, and containerized environments
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain backend services supporting distributed storage systems
- Contribute to protocol-integrated services (NFS, SMB, S3) within a larger architecture
- Write clean, efficient, and maintainable C++ code (primary), with exposure to other languages as needed
- Develop and maintain automated tests (unit, integration, API)
- Participate in CI/CD workflows, ensuring code is tested and deployable
- Debug issues across application, Linux OS, networking, and container layers with support
- Participate in code reviews and adopt best practices for code quality and performance
- Collaborate with QE and SRE to improve observability (logging, metrics, tracing)
- Learn and apply distributed systems principles such as replication, fault tolerance, and consistency
- Use AI-assisted development tools (e.g., copilots, debugging assistants) to improve productivity while validating correctness and performance
Qualifications
Must-Have Qualifications
- 25 years of software engineering experience
- Strong programming skills in C++ (primary language) with solid understanding of memory management and performance fundamentals
- Experience building backend services or systems-level components
- Experience writing automated tests (unit and integration)
- Experience working with Linux-based development environments
- Basic understanding of distributed systems concepts (e.g., replication, fault tolerance, consistency)
- Experience working with version control and CI/CD workflows
- Practical experience using AI-assisted coding tools and validating outputs for correctness
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in containerized environments (Docker, Kubernetes)
- Exposure to file system protocols or storage systems (NFS, SMB, S3)
- Experience debugging issues across system layers (application, OS, networking)
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP)
- Familiarity with observability tooling (logs, metrics, tracing)
- Experience working in multi-language environments (e.g., Go, Python, Java alongside C++)
Ideal Qualifications
- Hands-on experience contributing to systems-level or storage-related components
- Experience working with or modifying protocol-integrated services
- Experience debugging production issues in distributed or containerized systems
- Experience improving test coverage and reliability in production environments
- Demonstrated use of AI tools to accelerate development, debugging, or testing workflows
Experience Guidelines
- 25 years total software engineering experience
- 13 years working on backend or systems-level software
- Exposure to distributed systems, storage systems, or containerized environments preferred
