Job Description

Role: Senior Mechanical Engineer

Function: Mechanical Engineering

Location: Bangalore, Karnataka, India (On-site)

Type: Full-time

Industry: Aerospace / Space Technology

About Company

The client is a well-capitalised, venture-backed startup that supplies low-cost, reliable satellite components for low-earth-orbit missions. You join a diverse, collaborative team that aims to democratize access to space. The culture rewards first-principles thinking, fast learning, and visible impact. Funding strength lets you move quickly from concept to flight hardware without red tape.

Position Overview

You take full ownership of mechanical designs that fly in space and make access to orbit affordable. You design, build, and qualify components that must survive launch loads and the harsh space environment. Your decisions shape product reliability, manufacturing efficiency, and mission success.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end mechanical design of satellite components and subsystems, including packaging, structural analysis, manufacturing, and testing.
  • Use first-principles thinking to drive data-backed design decisions and streamline assembly and test processes.
  • Optimise production methods to boost efficiency, cut waste, and improve quality.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive design documentation that meets NASA, MIL, and ISO standards.
  • Apply GD&T to create cost-effective, high-quality parts.
  • Design opto-mechanical assemblies.
  • Perform hand calculations and analyses to verify structural and thermal integrity.
  • Build and test prototypes, collaborating closely with cross-functional experts.
  • Lead structural, vibration, and shock testing to validate component reliability.
  • Support test planning, qualification campaigns, debugging, and root-cause analysis.
  • Work hands-on with flight and test hardware to troubleshoot and refine designs.
  • Oversee component fabrication and ensure alignment with performance requirements.
  • Manage vendor relationships to achieve stringent space-grade performance criteria.
  • Lead technical reviews and design gates, presenting concepts and results to stakeholders.
  • Balance multiple projects in a fast-paced environment and meet tight deadlines.

Must have Criteria

  • 5+ years of mechanical design experience for satellites or space systems from requirements definition through manufacturing and testing.
  • Proficiency in CAD software and PLM tools.
  • Strong expertise in structural analysis, GD&T, and aerospace manufacturing processes.
  • Experience building dynamic hardware and executing vibration and shock tests.
  • Hands-on experience with machining and fabrication techniques.
  • Degree in Aerospace Engineering or related field with background in satellite development.
  • Ability to work on-site in Bangalore with a potential hybrid arrangement.
  • Willingness to work extended hours and weekends when mission schedules demand.

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with OnShape, Nastran, MATLAB, and Python.
  • Background in opto-mechanical systems.

What We Offer

  • Well-capitalised environment that funds rapid iteration and testing.
  • A rewarding workplace where you learn quickly and make a visible impact.
  • Mission-driven colleagues committed to making space affordable.
  • Collaborative, diverse team that values first-principles thinking.
