The Global Commercial Services (GCS) division of American Express is the global leader in the Commercial Payments Solutions space. The Commercial Data Office (CoDO) team, within Global Commercial Services (GCS), is focused on powering the best customer experience and driving value through data. With continuous changes in the regulatory environment and data innovation, CoDO plays a key role in supporting GCS sustainable growth balanced with controls and risk management. In partnership with the Enterprise Data Office and across GCS, CoDO is tasked with building new, innovative data solutions for our customers and leading the program for adherence to data regulations and data management best practices.
How will you make an impact in this role
As a Senior Manager of Commercial Data Governance & Management, you will use your knowledge of commercial data along with your expertise in Data Governance & Data Risk Management to ensure we deliver high quality data to power critical initiatives as well as impress our GCS customers by meeting and exceeding their data needs. You will work collaboratively with global cross-functional teams, including business and technology partners and stakeholders to improve the value of our commercial data. You will play a key role in modernizing the management of our GCS data assets and implementing an inspirational Commercial Data Governance program. You will have the opportunity to partner across various business units, technology teams, and product/platform teams to define and implement the data governance strategy, monitoring and managing data quality, resolving data/platform issues, and driving consistency, usability, and governance of specific GCS product data across the organization.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
- Create, maintain and implement multi-year roadmaps, strategy and procedures/guidelines for GCS Data Governance / Data Risk Management programs
- Harmonize key policies and guidelines (e.g. Data Governance, Data Risk Management, Data Quality, Data Definition, Data Creation. Data Sharing, Data Usage policies) with the processes vital to comply with those policies, in collaboration with multi-functional partners.
- Define and report metrics for GCS Data Governance / Data Risk Management programs
- Collaborate with GCS business process / product owners to modify or implement new repeatable and reliable businesses processes in order to implement truly effective data governance and management
- Provide guidance and support for GCS data governance practitioners while collaborating with the Enterprise Data Office to ensure alignment and consistency within our Commercial Data Governance practices
- Provide consulting to GCS Product Development teams and develop a GCS community of Data Stewards to aid in identifying critical data, maintaining data definitions, classifying data, supporting data sourcing / usage requests, measuring data quality, and remediating data issues
- Work across the business unit to define and document data governance deliverables for critical data within prioritized data domains
- Assess and mitigate data risks via the Commercial Data Governance / Data program and or self directed product development teams
- Partner with legal, compliance and operational excellence to account for and uphold diverse privacy and compliance requirements across geographies. Ensure appropriate protections for data integrity, privacy, and regulatory compliance, including assurances for the validity of different potential analyses.

Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of direct experience relating to creation and execution of formal data governance and/or data management programs
- Solid understanding of current and upcoming data governance, data management, and data product techniques and trends, with a point of view on the evolving concepts and standard methodologies
- Demonstrable understanding of privacy, risk, compliance and regulatory concerns and ability to articulate the impact to partners and stakeholders
- Consistent track record of understanding business challenges and strategies and connecting those to data and capabilities
- Exposure to Data Quality (DQ) initiatives, along with a solid understanding of SQL for data analysis and profiling.
- Significant and comprehensive direct work experience in large scale/enterprise data projects
- Familiarity with Agile project methodology and tools such as Rally/Jira. Solid experience in agile development and backlog management
- Proven project management experience and working with partners across a diverse, global set of business and technology teams
- Superb communication skills, both written and oral, as well as superior interpersonal and relationship building skills
- Demonstrable experience of driving significant improvements in business value through data management
- Ability to work with white space to craft and implement solutions to address sophisticated challenges
- Ability to put enterprise thinking first, connect the role's agenda to enterprise priorities and balance the needs of customers, partners, colleagues & shareholders
- Demonstrable learning agility, ability to make decisions quickly and with the highest level of integrity. Eagerness to test, learn, fail and improve is essential.
- Must have a positive, collaborative leadership style with colleague and customer first approach
- Solid attention to detail with a relentless focus on delivering accurately, efficiently, and with high quality
- Hands-on experience solving data and process related problems
- Previous leadership experience with managing direct report(s)
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience
