Senior Database Backend Engineer
Location: Bangalore/ Salem/ Chennai
As a Senior Database Backend Engineer, you will own the design, development, deployment, and optimization of our database systems and ETL pipelines. You'll ensure our platforms handle sensitive clinical and operational data at scale, meet stringent compliance requirements, and deliver rock-solid performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement robust, normalized database schemas and data models (SQL and NoSQL)
- Apply normalization rules, define constraints, and enforce business logic at the database level
- Write, review, and optimize T-SQL queries, stored procedures, functions, and triggers
- Build and maintain ETL processes using DTS, SSIS, or custom SQL scripts to ingest data from SQL/NoSQL stores, CSV/text files, Excel, Oracle, MySQL, MS Access, etc.
- Monitor, diagnose, and resolve production database issues, performance bottlenecks, and deadlocks
- Implement high-availability, disaster-recovery strategies, and data integrity safeguards
- Automate database operations provisioning, migration, backup/restore and generate performance benchmark reports
- Collaborate with software developers, data engineers, and business analysts to translate clinical requirements into technical solutions
- Create and maintain comprehensive database documentation
Required Skills
- 5+ years of database/backend engineering experience, with deep expertise in Microsoft SQL Server (2016+) and T-SQL
- Proficiency in relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL systems (MongoDB, Redis)
- Strong skills in indexing strategies, query optimization, and performance tuning using SQL Profiler or similar tools
- Hands-on experience with DTS, SSIS, SSRS, and SSAS
- Competence in writing data migration scripts and automating ETL workflows
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and infrastructure-as-code
- Proficiency in a backend language (Python, Go, Java, or Node.js) to integrate with database layers
- Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps best practices
- Solid problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and commitment to clean, maintainable code
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to work both independently and in cross-functional teams
Good to have Industry-Specific Skills (Healthcare)
- Knowledge of HL7 v2/v3 and FHIR standards
- Familiarity with EHR/EMR platforms (Epic, Cerner) and clinical data repositories
- Proven track record implementing HIPAA-compliant solutions, PHI encryption, and data de-identification
- Understanding of medical coding systems (ICD-10, CPT) and healthcare billing workflows
- Experience handling large-scale clinical datasets and medical imaging (DICOM)
- Awareness of healthcare interoperability frameworks and API security best practices
- Contributions to open-source healthcare data tools or FHIR libraries
- Experience at a product-led SaaS healthcare company
