About the Role
We're looking for a driven, self-starting Senior Backend Engineer who is passionate about building scalable systems and solving complex engineering challenges. This is an opportunity to support with the ownership of critical services at the core of our security platform, shaping not only how we build software, but how we leverage emerging AI-powered development practices to accelerate delivery while maintaining exceptional standards of quality, security, and reliability.
You'll work alongside security analysts, product managers, and engineers across the business to design, build, and operate resilient backend systems that make a meaningful impact. We value engineers who think beyond tickets, challenge assumptions, take initiative, and help elevate the people and technology around them.
This role is 5 days a week onsite.
What You'll Do
- Take ownership of the design, development, and operation of production-grade Python microservices using FastAPI (and Django where appropriate), applying modern architectural principles including domain-driven design, asynchronous programming, and clean architecture.
- Build and evolve event-driven systems that are resilient by design, implementing patterns such as idempotency, retry handling, dead-letter processing, and back-pressure management.
- Own services from concept through production, operating within AWS environments using technologies such as EKS, RDS/PostgreSQL, IAM, messaging services, and S3, with infrastructure managed through Terraform and delivered via GitHub Actions and FluxCD.
- Partner closely with frontend engineers working within an Angular microfrontend architecture to create intuitive, well-versioned APIs and seamless integration experiences.
- Champion engineering excellence through comprehensive testing strategies including unit, integration, contract, and end-to-end testing. We believe observability, testing, and CI/CD quality signals are core product features, not afterthoughts.
- Build highly observable systems through structured logging, metrics, and distributed tracing, enabling rapid diagnosis and resolution of production issues.
- Influence technical direction through architecture discussions, code reviews, security-focused design reviews, and threat modelling exercises.
- Contribute to a high-performing Agile team by actively participating in planning, estimation, refinement sessions, retrospectives, and technical decision-making.
- Help define and promote best practices for AI-assisted development, ensuring technology enables greater productivity without sacrificing maintainability, security, or craftsmanship.

Essential Skills & Experience
- Backend engineering experience, with Python as a primary language, delivering and operating production systems at scale.
- Strong hands-on experience with FastAPI and/or Django, including asynchronous programming, dependency injection, Pydantic, API design, versioning, and authentication/authorisation frameworks.
- Deep understanding of distributed systems and microservice architectures, including service boundaries, eventual consistency, messaging patterns, resilience strategies, and fault-tolerant design.
- Strong PostgreSQL and Amazon RDS expertise, including schema design, indexing strategies, query optimization, and safe database migrations.
- Practical experience deploying and operating containerized workloads on AWS using Kubernetes and EKS.
- Experience with modern CI/CD practices, GitHub Actions, and GitOps deployment methodologies, including FluxCD.
- Strong engineering fundamentals across testing, observability, application security, documentation, and operational excellence.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience producing design proposals, RFCs, incident reports, and technical documentation.
- A proactive mindset with a strong sense of ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Desirable Skills
- Experience within cybersecurity, managed security services (MSSP), SOC environments, or SaaS security products.
- Familiarity with Angular and microfrontend architectures, enabling effective collaboration on backend and frontend integration.
- Experience designing AI-driven or agentic workflows for security operations, analyst enrichment, or decision support systems.
- Experience creating and maintaining AI development frameworks, including AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, MCP servers, or custom tooling that improves team-wide productivity.
- Daily use of AI coding assistants such as Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor, or similar, with a strong understanding of where AI adds value and where engineering judgment remains essential.
- Familiarity with security technologies and integrations such as SIEM, SOAR, EDR, or ServiceNow Security Incident Response.
- Exposure to data warehousing, ETL pipelines, and workflow automation platforms such as Apache Airflow or n8n.
- Experience writing and reviewing Terraform for enterprise-scale infrastructure deployments.
- AWS certifications such as Solutions Architect Associate or Professional.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
