Senior Backend Developer

BirdChime is a Shopify app startup, building since 2022. Our app, Bird Pickup Delivery, is used by 7,000+ merchants in 60+ countries to schedule store pickups and local deliveries, and holds a 5.0 rating on the Shopify App Store with 450+ reviews. We are a small, remote team that ships every week.

About the role

Today, nearly every code review, architecture decision, and is this ready to ship call runs through our founder. That makes him the bottleneck and slows everyone down. We are hiring a Senior Backend Developer to change that.

This is a hands-on role. You will be in the code every day, building and shipping the backend that thousands of merchants depend on. You will also be the senior engineer the team leans on: reviewing code, setting standards, writing the documentation that stops knowledge from living in one person's head, and unblocking other engineers. You will work directly with the founder, with real ownership and no layers of management in between.

What you'll do

• Build and ship the core backend yourself: scheduling, rates, notifications, and Shopify API integrations
• Own backend architecture and make the calls on how systems are designed
• Review the team's pull requests and raise the engineering bar
• Write and maintain documentation so the team is not dependent on any single person
• Unblock other engineers and remove the founder as the single point of approval
• Work directly with the founder on what gets built next

What we're looking for

• 5+ years building production backends, including time owning systems that others depend on
• Strong, hands-on Ruby on Rails
• Experience building or maintaining Shopify apps
• You have reviewed other engineers code and raised a team's bar, not just shipped your own work
• You take ownership without being asked and follow through on what you start

Work setup

• Full-time, fully remote, India-based
• Standard hours, no rotational shifts
• You will work directly with the founder
