We are a micro-startup within Setu, owning the BBPS stack and powering bill payments across leading banks and fintechs
Every month, transactions worth around billions flow through our systems. We build for scale, reliability, and trust so that millions of customers experience seamless bill payments across India.
We are hiring a Backend Engineer (SDE II) to join the BBPS team at Setu. This role is for engineers who want to build reliable, high-scale payment systems and take end-to-end ownership of meaningful backend problems. The team works on systems that demand scale, resilience, performance, and cost efficiency.

What will you do at Setu
- Design, build, and maintain backend services that power high-scale, low-latency payment systems.
- Take end-to-end ownership of problem statements, from architecture and implementation to rollout and monitoring.
- Continuously optimize performance and infrastructure costs, identifying opportunities to make our systems faster and leaner.
- Collaborate with product, frontend, and infra teams to deliver reliable and scalable solutions.
- Strengthen system observability, fault tolerance, and scalability through metrics, tracing, and alerting.
- Follow and champion engineering best practices including testing, documentation, code reviews, and CI/CD automation.

- Languages and frameworks: Golang/ Python or Similar
- Datastores: PostgreSQL, Redis, ClickHouse, DynamoDB
- Messaging and queues: RabbitMQ, SQS
- Infra and monitoring: AWS, Prometheus, Grafana
- CI/CD and tooling: GitLab, Terraform, Docker
What We Are Looking For
- Strong hands-on experience and backend technologies.
- Solid understanding of relational databases, especially PostgreSQL, distributed systems, concurrency, and system design.
- Experience in scaling backend systems or optimizing infrastructure costs at high scale.
- Familiarity with AWS and observability tooling such as Grafana, Prometheus, and ClickHouse.
- Demonstrated ownership mindset with the ability to take initiatives from concept to production.
- Passion for clean, maintainable, and efficient code.
