Job Description

Purpose

CEEW is seeking to hire an Intern to support the work of the Global Heat Health Information Network (GHHIN) South Asia Hub. The intern will work closely with the Climate Resilience team and contribute to research, stakeholder engagement, knowledge management, and coordination activities related to heat and health across South Asia.

The intern's responsibilities will include conducting stakeholder mapping and maintaining a database of organisations, experts, researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and other relevant actors working on heat, health, climate resilience, and related areas across South Asia. The intern will also assist with desk-based research, literature reviews, data collection, and synthesis of information on heat-related issues. They will support the preparation of background research, briefs, presentations, meeting materials, and other knowledge products. The role may also involve tracking developments, initiatives, policies, and programmes related to heat and health across South Asian countries.

In addition, the intern will support the coordination of stakeholder meetings, consultations, workshops, and other Hub activities. This may include preparing meeting agendas and minutes, coordinating with participants, maintaining stakeholder records, and supporting communication and outreach activities. The intern may also assist in disseminating information and knowledge products through relevant communication channels.

The ideal candidate should have an educational background in climate studies, environmental studies, disaster management, public policy, development studies, or a related field. Candidates should have strong research, writing, and communication skills, with an interest in climate change, extreme heat, heat-health risks, and regional collaboration. Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Excel, data management, and basic research tools will be an advantage. Prior experience in stakeholder mapping, research, outreach, or coordination will be desirable.

In addition to the duties and responsibilities outlined above, the intern should be willing to take on other tasks and responsibilities as required to support the effective implementation of the GHHIN South Asia Hub's activities.

Job duties and accountabilities

Primary responsibilities

Research and analysis

  • Conduct desk-based research on heat and health risks, policies, programmes, and interventions across South Asian countries.
  • Support stakeholder mapping to identify and categorise key organisations, experts, researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and institutions working on heat and health.
  • Collect, organise, and maintain stakeholder information and databases to support the expansion and strengthening of the GHHIN South Asia Hub network.
  • Conduct literature reviews on extreme heat, heat-health impacts, vulnerability, adaptation, heat action planning, and related themes, and synthesise findings into concise and actionable insights.
  • Support the collection and analysis of qualitative and quantitative information from secondary sources and stakeholder consultations.
  • Assist in identifying and documenting case studies, good practices, tools, datasets, and innovative approaches to heat-health management across South Asia.
  • Contribute to the preparation of research outputs, including background notes, briefs, presentations, reports, and other knowledge products.
  • Support the development of country and regional-level analyses by synthesising evidence on heat risks, vulnerabilities, policies, and institutional responses.
  • Assist in tracking emerging research, policies, initiatives, and developments related to heat and health across the region.
  • Support the broader GHHIN South Asia Hub team in research, knowledge management, stakeholder engagement, and coordination activities as required.

Other responsibilities

  • Contribute to strategic communication outputs, including blogs, briefs, and knowledge products on heat resilience.
  • Respond to research requests from team members by compiling evidence, summarising findings, and preparing concise analyses.
  • Assist in preparing presentations, reports, and internal documentation.
  • Provide inputs to strengthen research approaches and analytical frameworks for identifying and assessing effective heat-health interventions and best practices.

Selection Criteria

Qualification

  • Educational background in disaster management, climate sciences, environmental studies, public policy, development studies, or other related fields.

Work experience

  • 0-1 years.

Key skills

  • A strong understanding of climate and disaster risk and resilience assessment frameworks, such as those provided by the IPCC and UNDRR, including their components such as hazard, exposure, and vulnerability.
  • Sector-level comprehension of the health sector and the impacts of climatic disasters, such as heat waves, on human health.
  • Knowledgeable about the disaster management cycle and the disaster governance mechanisms in India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python (preferred) and familiarity with data analysis libraries (e.g., Pandas, NumPy).
  • Working knowledge of tools such as Microsoft Excel; familiarity with GIS tools (QGIS/ArcGIS/Google Earth Engine) is an advantage but not mandatory.
  • Understanding of disaster management and climate sciences.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Detail-oriented approach to research and analysis.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Adaptability and willingness to learn new skills as required.
