Job description & Purpose

The successful candidate will assist the team members in planning, producing, scripting and researching stories that can travel to global audiences with creative digital treatments and formats and is expected to deliver accurate, engaging, and impartial news on-air while representing the newsroom's editorial standards with clarity and credibility.

It has more than 250 journalists and operational staff, bringing you distinctive, impartial and world-class content and is the BBC's sole provider of content for its Indian language websites and social media platforms including English. Key responsibilities and accountabilities

  • To generate ideas, develop pitches with reporters/producers, do storyboarding and scripting, lead editorial projects and roll outs with other BBC teams, and provide editorial and logistical support for deployments
  • Present content on TV or online. This might be live or recorded.
  • Required to work on stories (text and video) for multi-platform outlets, including, online and social media mainly in English and Gujarati, as and when needed.
  • Work in partnership with other reporters and producers at base and other locations.
  • Use a range of video, audio and digital equipment and information technology to research, write, assemble, edit and deliver outputs in the appropriate medium, to the highest professional standards.
  • Exercise editorial judgment in developing story ideas and producing accurate and impartial journalism.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to improving diversity in the Collective Newsroom and understands how individual differences can benefit the organisation.
  • To convey story and programme ideas and to contribute fully to the planning process for upcoming news events.
  • To get one's message understood clearly by adopting a range of styles, tools and techniques appropriate to the audience and the nature of information.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to sustain performance, particularly under pressure to meet deadlines and changing priorities and circumstances.
  • To provide timely support to breaking news scenarios and lead on forward planning, making search calendars and advising language teams on stories and current affairs coverage in India.
  • Provide timely, expert and authoritative news coverage on different region, fully observing Editorial Guidelines.
  • Follow safety requirements and instructions, especially in relation to emergencies; and report any accidents, dangerous situations or defects in safety arrangements.
  • Undertake pre- and post-production and studio work, live and pre-recorded. Use a range of video, audio and digital equipment and information technology to research, write, assemble, edit and deliver programmes in the appropriate medium, to the highest professional standards.
  • Liaise closely with other team members and with other departments, to ensure that output material is shared, duplication is avoided, and best practice is upheld.
  • Take a lead within a team setting or on delivering a specific piece of journalism or project as appropriate.
  • Tailor different news treatments for different audiences ensuring that the output reflects the audiences we serve.
  • Prioritise and plan activities taking into account all relevant issues and factors such as deadlines, staffing and resources available.
  • Produce engaging packages through a range of production skills.
  • Demonstrate balanced and impartial judgement. Makes appropriate editorial decisions, taking account of conflicting views where necessary.
  • Demonstrate sound editorial and policy decisions based upon a clear understanding of distinctive news agenda, the requirements of news and current affairs coverage and the audience and delivering to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards.
  • Understands how a team works effectively.
  • Expected to work flexibly as required. In any Shifts.

Requirements

Knowledge, skills, training and experience
  • Significant recent experience as a journalist, with a good knowledge of production techniques.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken Gujarati is essential. Should be able to speak correct Gujarati with proper pronunciation.
  • Good level of written and spoken English is desirable.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills (English and Gujarati) and risk management skills.
  • Basic video editing skills.
  • Proven skills in writing and ability to produce video and text-based stories in English and Gujarati.
  • Good understanding of digital platforms and the types of content which do well on them.
  • Ability to use technology as required, in order to gather material for broadcast.
  • Understanding of health and safety procedures and how they apply to broadcasting.
  • Knowledge of and aptitude for information technology skills.
  • Should be enthusiastic about collaboration and learning new technical skills such as filming and editing and can work under tight deadlines and travel at short notice.
  • Demonstrable interest and proven track record in social media.
  • Able to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of people.
  • Demonstrable interest in new media which will include knowledge of how to maximise a story.
  • Effective planning and organising skills, ability to concentrate on several areas of work at one time, delivering consistently to deadlines and reacting positively to changes and conflicting priorities.
  • Ability to write creatively in an engaging manner, adapt, produce and translate with accuracy, clarity and style appropriate to differing audiences and forms of media suitable for multimedia output.
