About The Role
We're looking for a Principal UX Designer to be one of the most senior and impactful designers in RX's UX organisation. This is a hands-on product design role. You will be embedded in product teams, designing end-to-end across research, concepting, prototyping, and high-fidelity delivery while also operating at a level above execution, helping shape how great design gets done across the organisation.
As a Principal Designer, you will tackle the most complex and ambiguous design problems RX faces, bringing strategic thinking and deep craft to challenges that require more than a standard design process. You will contribute to RX's design system, helping maintain quality and consistency across the portfolio. You will mentor and raise the capability of other designers, and partner closely with the Head of UX to continuously improve the team's ways of working.
You will actively explore how AI tools and capabilities can be applied to RX's products and design workflows, helping the Head of UX build a smarter, faster, and more effective design practice. You will report directly into the Head of UX and serve as a key strategic partner in shaping the direction of the design organisation.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver end-to-end product design within individual product teams, from research and problem framing through to prototyping and high-fidelity UI, leading by example through the quality and rigour of your own work.
- Take on the most complex, high-ambiguity design challenges in the organisation, applying advanced critical and design thinking to identify innovative solutions and drive them through to delivery.
- Ground product decisions in deep customer understanding, maintaining an active awareness of user needs, pain points, competitor behaviour, and market trends across your product areas.
- Contribute to RX's design system ensuring your own work meets system standards, identifying opportunities to evolve components or patterns, and supporting other designers in applying the system effectively.
- Mentor and coach designers across the team, helping them develop confidence in their thinking, sharpen their process, and grow their craft.
- Represent UX in product strategy meetings, bringing customer insight and design perspective into decisions at the earliest possible stage.
- Build connections across product teams; identifying shared patterns, overlapping problems, and opportunities to align design work across the portfolio.
- Develop strategies and processes that improve how the whole team discovers and prioritises customer needs.
- Actively engage with AI tools and emerging technologies alongside the broader team, contributing to a shared understanding of what's useful and helping embed effective new approaches into the team's workflow.
- Use data, research, and testing to validate design decisions and present findings clearly to product and business stakeholders.
- Partner with the Head of UX to help evolve team processes, standards, and ways of working over time.
Requirements
- 10+ years of experience as a UX or product designer, with a portfolio demonstrating strong craft across complex digital products.
- Comfortable operating in product teams as a hands-on designer while also thinking and contributing at a strategic level.
- A track record of taking on difficult, ambiguous design problems and driving high-quality solutions through to delivery.
- Experience contributing to or working alongside a design system, with a solid understanding of component thinking, consistency, and accessibility standards.
- Strong knowledge of WCAG and inclusive design principles.
- Deep expertise in user research and data-driven design, with the ability to synthesise insights across sources and use them to frame problems and influence decisions.
- A genuine interest in AI and emerging design tools, with hands-on experience using them within a design practice and a collaborative approach to sharing what you learn with the team.
- Strong mentoring skills, with a natural instinct for helping others grow without needing to manage them directly.
- Proficiency in Figma and modern prototyping tools.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present ideas and findings clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience working in agile environments; exposure to eCommerce, marketplaces, or content platforms is a plus.
