Job Description
About Team
Order Life Cycle / Fulfilment Management. We are looking for a Principal Software Engineer to be a technical leader and architect within our International Order Management & Fulfilment team. In this role, you will set the technical vision and architectural direction for systems that power the entire order lifecycle — from placement through fulfilment and post-purchase — across multiple international markets including Mexico (MX), Canada (CA), Chile, and beyond.
This is a high-impact, high-visibility role where you will drive platform-level decisions, define engineering standards, mentor senior engineers, and own the technical roadmap for systems processing millions of orders across diverse regulatory, logistical, and business environments. You will be the go-to technical authority for order orchestration, fulfilment routing, and post-purchase services at a global scale.
What You'll Do
Define Technical Vision & Architecture: Own the long-term architectural roadmap for OMS/FMS platforms, ensuring scalability, resilience, and extensibility across all international markets.
Design & Architect Distributed Systems: Lead the design of high-throughput, low-latency backend systems for order orchestration, fulfillment decision engines, and post-purchase workflows supporting millions of daily transactions.
Drive Multi-Market Platform Strategy: Architect systems that are inherently multi-tenant and configurable — supporting market-specific business rules, tax regulations, payment methods, carrier integrations, and fulfillment models for MX, CA, Chile, and future markets without code forks.
Lead Order Services Orchestration: Own the design and evolution of the Order Services Orchestration Layer — coordinating order state transitions, event-driven workflows, and cross-domain integrations (payments, inventory, logistics, returns).
Drive Engineering Excellence: Establish coding standards, design patterns, review practices, and architectural decision records (ADRs) that raise the bar for the entire engineering organization.
Mentor & Grow Engineers: Provide technical mentorship to Staff, Senior, and mid-level engineers. Conduct architecture reviews, lead design sessions, and foster a culture of technical rigor and continuous learning.
Influence Cross-Org Strategy: Collaborate with Product, Platform, and peer Principal Engineers across Walmart to align technical strategies, drive shared platform adoption, and reduce duplication across the international tech ecosystem.
Champion Operational Excellence: Drive SRE best practices including observability, alerting, chaos engineering, capacity planning, and incident management for mission-critical order systems.
Leverage AI & Emerging Technologies: Evaluate and integrate AI/ML capabilities (e.g., intelligent fulfillment routing, anomaly detection, predictive demand signals) into the order platform. Champion AI literacy across the team and identify opportunities where generative AI and automation can accelerate engineering velocity.
Own Technical Risk & Decision-Making: Make high-stakes technical decisions on build-vs-buy, technology selection, migration strategies, and deprecation plans with clear reasoning and organizational alignment
What You Will Bring12+ years of hands-on software engineering experience, with 5+ years in a principal, staff+, or architect-level role.
Deep expertise in backend systems: Java (Spring Boot, Spring Cloud), microservices architecture, RESTful & gRPC APIs, and event-driven design.
Distributed systems mastery: Proven track record designing systems with Kafka/event streaming, NoSQL databases (Cassandra, MongoDB, Cosmos DB), caching (Redis), and relational stores — at scale.
Architecture leadership: Experience defining and driving enterprise-level architectural decisions, producing ADRs, leading design reviews, and mentoring architects.
Multi-market/multi-tenant platform experience: Demonstrated ability to build configurable, market-agnostic platforms that adapt to diverse regulatory, business, and operational requirements without code branching.
Order Management / Fulfillment domain expertise: Deep understanding of order lifecycle, fulfillment orchestration, inventory allocation, shipping/logistics integration, and post-purchase flows (returns, refunds, exchanges).
Cloud-native expertise: Production experience with Kubernetes, Docker, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, and cloud platforms (Azure/GCP).
Strong communication & influence: Ability to articulate technical vision to both engineering teams and executive stakeholders; experience driving consensus across organizational boundaries.
AI literacy: Understanding of machine learning concepts, familiarity with AI/ML integration patterns, and ability to identify practical AI opportunities within engineering workflows.
Nice-to-Have
Experience with international e-commerce — localization, cross-border logistics, multi-currency, and regional compliance (tax, data residency).
Hands-on experience with AI/ML tooling — LLMs, MLOps, feature stores, or real-time inference pipelines.
Familiarity with Walmart's internal tech stack — WCNP, Kafka (Walmart flavor), Strati, CCM, OneOps/Concord, ElementAI.
Experience with chaos engineering frameworks, DR drills, and multi-region failover architectures.
Background in graph-based or rules-engine-based order orchestration systems.
Open-source contributions or published technical writing (blogs, conference talks, patents).
Experience building developer platforms or internal frameworks adopted across multiple teams.
