Job Description

POSITION: PIPELINE DESIGNER - (OIL/GAS)

Education: Diploma Mechanical Engineer/bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering

Experience: Minimum 5 - 10 years in Design of Pumping Stations, Piping, steel tanks, Pipeline etc. Preferred with UAE Consultancy Experience

Location: Chennai

Apipeline designer in the oil & gas industryis the person who turns process and routing ideas into buildable pipeline systemsonshore or offshorethat safely move oil, gas.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Designpipeline layouts(routing, elevations, crossings, tie-ins)
  • Createdrawings and models(plan & profile, alignment sheets, isometrics)
  • Size and specifypipes, valves, fittings, supports
  • Coordinate withprocess, civil, Geotech, and environmentalteams
  • Ensure designs meetcodes & standards(ASME B31.4 / B31.8, API, ISO, client specs)
  • Consider constructability: welding, trenching, HDD, pigging, maintenance access
  • AutoCAD / AutoCAD Plant 3D
  • EPC companies (engineering & construction firms)
  • Oil & gas operators
  • Pipeline transmission companies
  • Offshore projects (platforms, subsea tiebacks) or onshore (cross-country lines)
  • Strong understanding ofpiping standards
  • Ability to readP&IDs and route surveys
  • Practical mindset (construction experience is a big plus)

  • Wall thickness, diameter, material selection
  • Hydraulic analysis (steady state / transient)
  • Stress & flexibility analysis (onshore / offshore)
  • Route engineering
  • Alignment sheets, crossings (road, river, rail)
  • Terrain, Geotech, and constructability input
  • Code compliance
  • ASME B31.4 / B31.8
  • API, ISO, DNV (esp. offshore)
  • Calculations & reports
  • Design basis, alignment sheets, crossing details
  • Class location, MAOP, corrosion allowance
  • Support to design & construction
  • Review drawings from designers
  • Respond to RFIs, site queries, as-built updates

Typical tools

  • Hydraulic: PIPEPHASE, OLGA, HYSYS, PIPESIM
  • Stress: CAESAR II, AutoPIPE
  • Drafting review: AutoCAD / Plant 3D / Bentley
  • GIS & survey data (onshore projects)

Experience level

  • Usually 28 years
  • Strong technical focus, limited leadership
  • Reports to Senior or Lead Pipeline Engineer

LEAD PIPELINE ENGINEER (OIL & GAS)

Core responsibilities

  • Technical leadership
  • Define pipeline design philosophy & criteria
  • Select codes, assumptions, and methodologies
  • Team leadership
  • Lead pipeline engineers & designers
  • Review and approve calculations & drawings
  • Interdisciplinary coordination
  • Interface with process, civil, Geotech, HSE, construction
  • Manage tie-ins, battery limits, and scope splits
  • Client & contractor interface
  • Technical meetings, design reviews, clarifications
  • Resolve deviations and approve technical queries
  • Risk & decision ownership
  • Crossing methods, routing changes, material upgrades
  • Constructability, operability, integrity considerations

Experience level

  • Typically, 815+ years
  • Deep code knowledge + field experience
  • Final technical authority for pipelines on the project
