Job Description

We're looking for a Physical Design Engineer with 3-10 years of experience in substation design to join our Transmission & Distribution team. The ideal candidate will be an Electrical Engineer with a strong background in creating primary electrical design deliverables for a variety of projects. This role requires a professional who is not only skilled in design but also capable of mentoring, collaborating, and solving complex problems to enhance the resilience and reliability of the electric grid.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engineering Design: You'll prepare detailed engineering drawings for EHV (Extra-High Voltage) projects for both AIS (air-insulated substations) and GIS (gas-insulated substations). This includes creating general arrangement plans, elevations, conduit and grounding layouts, and lighting & lightning protection designs.
  • Calculations & Analysis: Conduct and prepare design calculations using specialized software like CDEGS, ETAP, Mathcad, and Visual Lighting. You will also be responsible for AIS Busbar design and reports.
  • Project Management & Collaboration: Prepare proposals, scope, and engineering cost estimates. You'll coordinate with other departments (Civil/Structural, Networks, etc.) and clients to ensure designs are compliant with standards like IEC/IEEE/NESC. You will monitor project schedules and ensure quality is maintained throughout.
  • Leadership & Mentorship: Provide guidance and mentorship to less experienced team members. You will also perform quality reviews for other engineers and designers, helping to develop and improve processes and tools to increase efficiency.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Experience: A minimum of 3 years and a maximum of 10 years of experience in substation physical design. Experience with U.S., Canadian, and U.K. projects is preferred.
  • Technical Skills: Familiarity with industry standards such as NESC and IEEE. Proficiency with design and analysis software is a must, and experience with CDEGS, WinIGS, and physical design 3D tools is a plus.
  • Personal Attributes: You must be diligent, organized, and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills are essential for solving complex problems and working both autonomously and as part of a team. Membership in a professional engineering institution (IET, CIGRE, IEC, IEEE) is also a plus.
