Role Overview and Detailed Responsibilities:

A Network Engineer specializing in Juniper technologies is an integral part of an organization's IT infrastructure team. This role focuses on designing, implementing, managing, and troubleshooting network solutions utilizing Juniper hardware and software. The successful candidate will possess deep technical knowledge of Juniper devices, protocols, and best practices, ensuring secure, efficient, and scalable network environments.

Position Title:

Network Engineer Juniper Specialist

Position Summary

The Network Engineer Juniper Specialist will be responsible for the administration, configuration, and maintenance of Juniper-based networking equipment across the organization's enterprise environment. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with Juniper routers, switches, firewalls, and associated network management tools. This individual will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure high availability, optimal performance, and security of all network infrastructures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Network Design and Implementation: Architect and deploy Juniper-centric network solutions in data center, campus, and branch environments. Analyze business requirements to design scalable and resilient network architectures using Juniper devices (e.g., MX, SRX, EX series).
  • Configuration and Administration: Configure Juniper routers, switches, and firewalls. Manage network services including VLANs, routing protocols (OSPF, BGP, EIGRP), VPNs, security policies, and traffic engineering.
  • Performance Monitoring: Utilize network management tools (Junos Space, SolarWinds, etc.) to proactively monitor network health, conduct performance tuning, and address bottlenecks before they impact operations.
  • Troubleshooting and Support: Diagnose and resolve complex network issues related to connectivity, security, and performance. Provide level 2/3 escalation support and root cause analysis for incidents involving Juniper hardware/software.
  • Security and Compliance: Implement and maintain security best practices, including firewall rule management, DDoS mitigation, IPS/IDS configuration, and compliance with organizational policies and regulatory standards.
  • Documentation: Create and maintain comprehensive network diagrams, configuration documentation, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all Juniper environments.
  • Upgrade and Patch Management: Plan, test, and execute firmware, software, and hardware upgrades for Juniper devices. Ensure all devices are up-to-date with the latest patches and security updates.
  • Disaster Recovery: Contribute to the development and testing of disaster recovery and business continuity plans, ensuring quick recovery from network outages or security incidents.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with other IT disciplines (servers, storage, security, applications) as well as vendors and service providers to ensure seamless end-to-end network operations.
  • Continuous Improvement: Research emerging Juniper technologies, evaluate suitability for current environments, and recommend enhancements for increased efficiency, resiliency, and cost-effectiveness.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Electronics, or a related field. Equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Certifications: Juniper Networks certifications such as JNCIA, JNCIS, JNCIP, or JNCIE are highly preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum 3-5 years of hands-on experience working with Juniper network devices in medium to large-scale enterprise environments.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong command of Junos OS, CLI, and GUI-based management. In-depth understanding of OSPF, BGP, MPLS, QoS, Layer 2/3 switching, and security fundamentals.
  • Scripting and Automation: Familiarity with network automation tools and scripting languages (Python, Ansible, etc.) for configuration management and troubleshooting is an advantage.
  • Analytical Skills: Excellent problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to analyze complex technical issues and devise effective solutions.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with experience in documenting network topologies, processes, and incident reports.
  • Teamwork: Proven ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams and communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Adaptability: Willingness to learn new technologies and adapt to rapidly changing network environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with cloud networking technologies (AWS, Azure, GCP) and integrating Juniper solutions in hybrid cloud environments.
  • Knowledge of virtualization platforms (VMware, Hyper-V) and network virtualization concepts (VXLAN, SDN).
  • Experience with network security tools and concepts, such as next-generation firewalls, intrusion prevention systems, and endpoint security integration.
  • Exposure to other networking vendor platforms (Cisco, Arista, Fortinet) for comparative troubleshooting and interoperability scenarios.
  • Participation in industry forums, user groups, or contributions to open-source networking projects.

Personal Attributes

  • Detail-Oriented: Strong attention to detail in configuration, documentation, and monitoring.
  • Proactive: Ability to anticipate network challenges and take preventative action.
  • Reliable: Commitment to ensuring high network uptime and rapid incident response.
  • Continuous Learner: Passion for keeping up with the latest in networking, cybersecurity, and Juniper advancements.
  • Customer-Focused: An understanding of how network performance impacts end-users and business operations.

Typical Duties

  • Design, deploy, and maintain complex Juniper-based network infrastructures.
  • Develop and implement network security policies and incident response plans.
  • Monitor network performance and optimize for speed, reliability, and scalability.
  • Collaborate with IT staff on integration of new applications and systems.
  • Participate in 24x7 on-call rotation for network emergencies.
  • Train and mentor junior network staff on Juniper best practices.
