Job Purpose
- The Core Network Infrastructure Engineer will be part of the Core Network Infrastructure team, responsible for delivering and supporting projects within a dynamic service provider environment.
- The role focuses on high-capacity connectivity, IP/MPLS, and Optical Transmission networks, while also providing advanced-level support to engineering and operations teams.
- The position is based offshore, with working hours aligned to partially overlap with UK business hours to ensure effective cross-team collaboration and to support out-of-hours maintenance windows for critical network changes.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver assigned core network projects involving planning, implementation, and remote execution of network changes.
- Perform network change planning and execute changes remotely in line with approved change management processes.
- Liaise with internal stakeholders and external suppliers/vendors as required to ensure successful project delivery.
- Carry out software upgrades on IP and Optical network elements during scheduled out-of-hours maintenance windows.
- Remotely oversee hardware upgrades and replacements on IP and Optical network infrastructure.
- Provide remote support for changes and upgrades within Fixed Networks, including PON-based topologies.
- Participate in out-of-hours work as required to support maintenance and network upgrade activities.
- Support engineering operations teams by providing advanced technical expertise.
- Undertake any other reasonable tasks or duties assigned by the line manager or senior management.
Required Skills & Experience
- Proven experience working within a Service Provider (ISP/Telco) environment supporting core network architectures.
- Experience operating within a multi-vendor network environment, with hands-on exposure to Cisco and Nokia platforms.
- Strong foundational networking knowledge with a continuous learning mindset.
- Advanced understanding of routers, switches, and network security concepts.
- Solid experience with Ethernet and IP/MPLS protocols, including design and operational support.
- Advanced knowledge and configuration experience with routing protocols:
- BGP
- OSPF
- IS-IS
- Strong expertise in IP addressing and subnetting, including IPv4 and IPv6.
- Advanced knowledge of switching technologies:
- Spanning Tree Protocol (STP)
- VLANs
- IEEE 802.1Q (Dot1q)
- QinQ
- Good understanding of additional network principles such as DNS and MX records.
Experience with service provider technologies, including:
- VPLS (E-LAN)
- E-Line
- L3 VPN
- EVPN
- DSL
- VRRP
Hands-on experience with:
- Nokia 7450 and 7750 platforms
- F5 BIG-IP
- FortiGate / Fortinet firewalls
