Job Description

About Origin

Origin (previously 10xConstruction) is building general-purpose autonomous robots for US construction to tackle rising costs, safety risks, and labour shortages. Our modular, multi-trade platform combines purpose-built hardware with real-time site intelligence to navigate complex environments and execute tasks with precision. Trained in high-fidelity simulation and already deployed on live sites, our robots deliver 5x faster execution, 250%+ margin expansion, and significant cost savings. Join India's most talent-dense robotics team consisting of individuals from IITs, Stanford, UCLA, etc.

About The Role

As a Mechanical Engineer, you are the core execution engine of the hardware team. You will be responsible for turning abstract concepts into solid CAD, generating manufacturing drawings, and physically building the robot in the lab. You will work on designing structural links, custom sensor mounts, and protective enclosures, ensuring our robots are rugged enough for the construction site.

Key Responsibilities -

Mechanical Design & CAD:

  • Design precision machined parts, sheet metal components, and 3D printed structures using Onshape or equivalent CAD tools
  • Manage component packaging, ensuring neat cable routing, thermal dissipation paths, and accessibility for maintenance
  • Create detailed, manufacturing-ready 2D drawings with appropriate GD&T for external vendors

Prototyping & Fabrication:

  • Build physical prototypes using aluminum extrusions (80/20), laser-cut panels, and industrial 3D printers
  • Work hands-on in the hardware lab using power tools (angle grinders, drills, bandsaws) to modify and iterate on structural designs quickly
  • Assemble complex electromechanical systems, integrating motors, gearboxes, and bearings

Calibration & Integration:

  • Design and implement precision calibration jigs and assembly fixtures to ensure repeatable robot assembly
  • Assist in defining tool and sensor coverage maps, conducting physical reachability tests to validate CAD models

Required Qualifications And Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field
  • 2-4 years of professional experience in mechanical design and product development
  • Strong proficiency in Onshape (or similar 3D CAD) and creating 2D manufacturing drawings
  • Solid understanding of basic FEA (stress and deflection analysis)
  • Thorough knowledge of standard manufacturing processes (CNC milling, turning, sheet metal bending)
  • Exceptional hands-on skills: You should be completely comfortable in a machine shop

Preferred Experiences

  • Experience designing custom mounting solutions for sensitive optical equipment (cameras, LiDAR)
  • Background in designing for harsh environments (IP ratings, dust/water ingress protection)
