Mechanical Design Engineer

WATER is a Biophysical Intelligence research company. Our mission is to teach matter to respond to life: we study how the human body and the physical world respond to each other, and we build machines that sense a body, model its state, and respond in real time. CAMA, an adaptive bed, and FLOW, an adaptive chair, are the first surfaces this research runs on. The work spans three research directions: machine learning and mathematics, bio research, and materials and electronics. The long-range outcomes we care about are human longevity and human experience.

You own parts and sub-assemblies from spec to tested hardware. You'll work on SolidWorks design, drawings, hand calculations, FEA, tolerance stack-ups, prototypes, and test rigs.

• Design parts and sub-assemblies in SolidWorks against a spec you help write.
• Produce manufacturing drawings — projection, sections, GD&T, thread and finish callouts — that a vendor can quote without calling you.
• Run first-order hand calculations: stress, deflection, bearing life, fastener preload, torque, gear ratio.
• Run FEA and know when the result is telling you something and when it is telling you about your mesh.
• Build tolerance stack-ups on assemblies that move.
• Assemble your own prototypes at the bench. Shim it, align it, and record what did not fit.
• Instrument and run test rigs, and write up what you measured rather than what you expected.
• Own BOMs and revisions for your parts, and drive ECRs when they change.

• Something you designed exists as a physical object, and you can show it to us.
• 1–4 years in mechanical design, or a project record that substitutes for it.
• B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical or equivalent.
• Strong CAD( Preferrably SolidWorks). You can produce a drawing that does not need three rounds of vendor clarification.
• Comfortable with hand tools and a vernier, not only a screen.
• Nice to have: 3D printing, machining or sheet metal experience, actuator selection, competition team background, scripting for rig data reduction.
