Job Description
About the rolePrimeform is looking for an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer capable of designing complete CNC machines and industrial equipment using professional 3D CAD software.This hands-on role converts functional requirements into manufacturable machine structures, motion systems, axis assemblies, spindle arrangements, guarding and supporting mechanical systems.
Key responsibilitiesDesign complete CNC machines and related industrial equipment.
- Develop machine concepts based on working envelope, load, accuracy, speed and production requirements.
- Create complete machine assemblies, subassemblies and individual component models.
- Design machine beds, columns, frames, axis structures, fixtures and mounting arrangements.
- Design linear-motion systems using guideways, ball screws, bearings, couplings and servo-motor mounting assemblies.
- Design spindle housings, work-holding systems, enclosures, guards, coolant tanks and operator-access areas.
- Integrate mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and lubrication requirements.
- Select suitable motors, bearings, guideways, ball screws, gearboxes, couplings and fasteners.
- Perform calculations for structural loads, power transmission, torque, deflection, vibration and factor of safety.
- Prepare manufacturing-ready drawings with dimensions, tolerances, materials, finishes and assembly instructions.
- Create bills of materials and review designs for manufacturability, assembly and maintenance.
- Support prototype manufacturing, assembly, testing, troubleshooting and design improvements.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Machine Design, Production Engineering or a related discipline.
- At least 4 years of relevant mechanical-design experience.
- Proven experience designing CNC machines, machine tools, special-purpose machines or industrial automation equipment.
- Advanced proficiency in at least one professional CAD platform, preferably SolidWorks or AutoCAD.
- Ability to create complex 3D parts, assemblies and manufacturing drawings.
- Strong understanding of CNC machine construction and multi-axis motion systems.
- Knowledge of guideways, ball screws, bearings, spindles, couplings, gearboxes and servo-motor mounting.
- Understanding of machining, fabrication, welding, sheet-metal work, heat treatment and surface finishing.
- Practical knowledge of GD&T, tolerance stack-up, limits, fits and clearances.
- Experience creating bills of materials and coordinating with machinists, fabricators, technicians and vendors.
