Role Summary:

Rakuten Symphony is strengthening its commercial governance capability to enable informed, consistent, and risk-aware decision-making across global sales opportunities. This role offers a unique opportunity to refine and institutionalize a Commercial Risk Management process that directly supports senior leadership decisions, margin protection, and long-term governance maturity.

Job Description

The Manager Commercial Risk Management will own and continuously improve the Commercial Risk Management framework for Rakuten Symphony. An initial process framework will be in place; this role is responsible for refining, stabilizing, scaling, and embedding the process into business-as-usual operations. The role sits within a neutral governance function and works closely with Sales team, Sales Governance , Corporate Functions and other business units to ensure early risk identification, objective assessment, and clear executive decision support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process & Policy Ownership:

Refine and enhance the commercial risk management framework post-rollout, including checklists, definitions, escalation thresholds, and governance rules.

Drive continuous process and policy improvement based on deal outcomes and lessons learned.

  • Risk Governance & Quality Control:

Ensure consistent and objective risk assessment across Finance, Legal, Procurement, Security, Delivery, and Technical functions.

Validate and challenge probability and impact scoring; ensure mitigation actions are practical, owned, and executable.

Assess residual risk and determine escalation and approval requirements.

  • Executive Decision Enablement:

Consolidate cross-functional risks into a single executive-ready view.

Advise COO / CCO / CEO on risk trade-offs, margin exposure, and deal viability.

  • Cross-Functional Coordination:

Proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.

  • Post-Decision Oversight:

Track execution of risk mitigation commitments post-win and monitor early risk indicators.

Flag deviations early and feed outcomes back into process improvements.

  • Risk Analytics, Benchmarking & Predictive Insights:

Leverage standardized risk register data across multiple opportunities to identify recurring and emerging commercial risk patterns, benchmark approved vs. rejected and won vs. lost deals, and generate portfolio‑level insights. Use these insights to progressively evolve the Commercial Risk Management process from descriptive risk reporting to predictive decision support, enabling improved margin protection and higher‑quality executive decisions.

Preferred Qualifications & Expertise

  • MBA from a Tier 1 or Tier 2 business school, preferably with experience at Big 4 or top-tier consulting firms, and hands-on experience in customer-facing risk management.
  • 7+ years of experience in commercial governance, risk management, deal desk, transaction management, or operations consulting.
  • Strong understanding of deal economics, pricing, margins, cashflow, and contractual risk.
  • Demonstrated experience working with senior leadership (COO / CCO / CFO / CEO).
  • Experience designing, implementing, or scaling governance frameworks and processes.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint; familiarity with SharePoint / Teams or similar collaboration tools.

What This Role Is Not

This role is not sales execution, legal contracting, finance control, or a PMO-only function. It is a commercial governance and decision-support role focused on building and improving enterprise-wide risk capability.
