The Role

JES2/JES3 Output Routing & Control

  • Configure and tune output queues, writer startup/shutdown behavior, error recovery, and reprint/hold/release workflows.
  • Establish standards for dataset attributes, forms control, separators, and message routing for operations teams.

IBM Print Subsystems

  • Install, configure, and support InfoPrint Server (including IP PrintWay extended/basic, LPD/LPR, direct socket printing).
  • Manage PSF (Print Services Facility) configuration-AFP resources, transforms, printers, and device/workstation definitions.
  • Integrate additional IBM print components as required (e.g., AFP resources, ACIF/Indexing, AFP/line data transforms).

Automation & Event Handling

  • Build and maintain automation rules and event handling using NetView/SA (automation tables, command lists) and OPS/MVS (OPS/REXX, AOF policies).
  • Automate writer recovery, queue cleanup, messagedriven actions, and operator assist tasks to reduce MTTR and manual effort.
  • Implement alerting and health checks for writers, queues, spool volumes, and printer endpoints.

Scripting & Tooling

  • Develop REXX utilities to validate routing tables, generate configurations, parse logs, and support reprint/reroute functions.
  • Create reusable scripts/runbooks for deployments, DR tests, and routine health checks.

Operations, Reliability & DR

  • Lead incident triage for JES/print failures (writer abends, device errors, transform failures, network issues).
  • Partner with infrastructure teams to ensure HA/DR for print services (redundant writers, alternate destinations, crosssite routing) participate in DR tests.
  • Maintain change records, risk/impact analyses, validation/backout plans, and postimplementation reviews.

Governance & Documentation

  • Maintain standards, runbooks, and design docs for JES routing, InfoPrint/PSF configuration, security controls, and operational procedures.
  • Collaborate with Security to enforce RACF controls for output datasets, started tasks, and remote print access support audits with evidence.

Who You Are

  • 12+ years in mainframe systems engineering with a focus on JES2/JES3 output management.
  • Strong handson experience with InfoPrint Server, PSF, and IBM print workflows (AFP/line data, transforms, routing).
  • Proficiency in REXX (and OPS/REXX) for automation and tooling.
  • Practical experience building automation with NetView/SA and OPS/MVS for message and event handling.
  • Solid understanding of z/OS operations (SDSF, console, JES commands), NJE, TCP/IP print protocols (LPR/LPD, IPP where applicable).
  • Proven incident response and RCA skills for JES writers, output queues, and print subsystem issues.

Preferred / Nice to Have

  • Knowledge of AFP resources (overlays, fonts), ACIF indexing, and transform tuning.
  • Experience with CA Spool/LRS/InfoPrint Manager or other output management suites.
  • Familiarity with certificate/TLS enablement for IP PrintWay Extended and secured endpoints.
  • Exposure to capacity planning for spool volumes and print throughput.

Core Competencies

  • Analytical troubleshooting and methodical RCA.
  • Strong communication with Operations, App teams, and Vendors.
  • Documentation rigor and change discipline.
  • Bias for automation and continuous improvement.

Success Measures (KPIs)

  • Availability/MTTR: Fewer writer/print outages faster automated recoveries.
  • Throughput/Latency: Improved endtoend print times and queue health.
  • Change Quality: High success rate, minimal emergency/backouts.
  • Operational Efficiency: Reduced manual interventions via NetView/SA & OPS/MVS automation.
  • Audit/Compliance: Clean evidence for access controls and data handling.
