The Role

Key Responsibilities

Performance Engineering & System Tuning

  • Analyze and optimize performance across large z/OS Parallel Sysplex environments, ensuring SLA adherence and efficient resource utilization.
  • Conduct endtoend performance tuning across CPU, memory, I/O, CF links/structures, WLM goals, and subsystem interactions.
  • Tune parameters for key z/OS components (e.g., JES2, TCP/IP stack, catalogs, VSAM structures, I/O paths, buffer pools, dispatching).

Capacity Planning & Forecasting

  • Perform comprehensive capacity planning for z/OS, Sysplex, LPARs, CF structures, and workload growth.
  • Analyze system trends using SMF/RMF data, modeling tools, SAS/MXG, and Splunk dashboards.
  • Provide quarterly and annual capacity forecasts with actionable recommendations for upgrades, reallocations, and optimization.

SMF/RMF Expertise

  • Collect, process, and analyze SMF and RMF data for CPU utilization, DASD performance, CF structures, network stack behavior, and workload throughput.
  • Create custom reports using SAS, MXG, and integrate data pipelines into Splunk for visualization and operational intelligence.
  • Interpret RMF Monitor I/III data and provide tuning recommendations.

WLM Policy Management

  • Design, maintain, and tune WLM policies (goal mode) across multiple LPARs and Sysplex environments.
  • Analyze workload behavior and adjust service classes, report classes, and importance levels to meet business priorities.
  • Coordinate with DB2, CICS, MQ, and batch teams to ensure subsystem goals align with overall workload strategy.

Subsystem & Infrastructure Performance

  • Evaluate and tune performance of z/OS subsystems including DB2, CICS, MQ, BFS, TCP/IP stack, and JES2 workloads.
  • Analyze interactions between workloads to reduce contention, bottlenecks, and queuing delays.
  • Work with Storage, DB2, CICS, MQ, and Sysplex teams to improve endtoend throughput.

Coupling Facility & LPAR Optimization

  • Analyze and tune Coupling Facility (CF) performance, including structure sizing, rebuild behavior, and CF link optimization.
  • Optimize LPAR weights, capping strategies, HiperDispatch, and processor resource allocation across CPCs.
  • Evaluate shared vs. dedicated processor configurations for performance and cost efficiency.

Monitoring, Reporting & Automation

  • Develop automated dashboards and reports using SAS, MXG, Splunk, or custom scripts.
  • Monitor system KPIs-including CPU utilization, MSUs, RNI, DASD response, CF occupancy, and WLM goal achievement.
  • Automate repetitive performance tasks using REXX, SAS macros, or Splunk custom queries.

Incident, Problem & Change Management

  • Lead performance investigations for system slowdowns, spikes, delays, WLM issues, and CF bottlenecks.
  • Provide RCA and permanent fixes for chronic performance issues.
  • Lead performance testing for changes, upgrades, migrations, sysplex expansions, and new workload introductions.

Documentation & Collaboration

  • Create clear technical documentation, performance baselines, tuning guidelines, and capacity reports.
  • Collaborate with z/OS, Infrastructure, DB2, MQ, CICS, Storage, and Application teams to ensure holistic system performance.
  • Present performance insights to technical leadership and capacity steering groups.
