The Role

ISV Installations & Maintenance

  • Perform SMP/E packaging and maintenance: set up/maintain CSI, RECEIVE/APPLY/CHECK/ACCEPT, manage HOLDDATA, handle PE/PTF remediation, and maintain FMIDs/feature entitlements.
  • Use z/OSMF (Software Management & Workflows) for guided installs, configuration, and repeatable deployments codify install steps as reusable workflows.
  • Plan and execute product upgrades, migrations, and compatibility validations across z/OS, DB2/CICS/MQ, network stack, and Parallel Sysplex environments.

Configuration, Administration & Operations

  • Configure product libraries, PARMLIB members, exits, PROCs, APF/LNKLST updates, dynamic changes, and IPL planning.
  • Administer and tune monitoring/management tools: Omegamon, BMC MainView, TMON, MXG, including data collection (SMF/RMF) and dashboard/report enablement (e.g., Splunk forwarders/parsers).
  • Integrate ISV tools with DB2, CICS, MQ environments for tracing, performance, and operations.

Observability, Troubleshooting & Performance

  • Analyze dumps with IPCS, interpret SYSLOG/LOGREC, set SLIP traps where required, and coordinate vendor case resolution.
  • Monitor and tune using RMF/SMF insights, WLM goals, and productspecific monitors drive RCA and permanent fixes.
  • Build/use MXG processing for SMF extracts integrate telemetry with Splunk for alerting, dashboards, and audit evidence.

Security, Compliance & Governance

  • Define and validate RACF/ACF2/Top Secret controls for ISV products (FACILITY, OPERCMDS, dataset profiles, STC IDs, SURROGATE/OPERATIONS).
  • Enforce APF/LPA protections, PPT updates, digital certificate/keyring requirements (ATTLS/SAF), and product hardening standards.
  • Maintain change records, risk/impact assessments, backout plans support audits (SOX/PCI/ISO) with documentation and evidence.

Vendor & Stakeholder Management

  • Engage with Broadcom/CA, BMC, 21st Century, ASG, Mackinney Systems, Rocket, Vanguard, LRS, SAS, SDS, Syncsort for licensing, compatibility, APAR/PTF tracking, and best practices.
  • Create clear runbooks/installation guides and knowledge articles for Operations and L2 teams lead CAB discussions for major changes.
  • Support DR/HA in Parallel Sysplex: ensure config parity, licensing readiness, and success in DR tests.

Required Qualifications

  • 7-12+ years as a z/OS Systems Programmer focusing on ISV product install/config/administration.
  • Strong handson with SMP/E (CSI design, zones, maintenance strategies, HOLDDATA) and z/OSMF (Software Management, Workflows).
  • Proficiency with monitoring tools: Omegamon, BMC MainView, TMONMXG processing for SMF Splunk integration (UF/heavy forwarder, props/transforms, dashboards).
  • Solid knowledge of DB2, CICS, MQ administration touchpoints and instrumentation experience in Parallel Sysplex (XCF, shared DASD, CF structures).
  • Strong JCL, REXX/CLIST, ISPF, USS/OMVS, dataset management (PDSE, catalogs), TCP/IP basics for agent connectivity.
  • Security fundamentals with RACF/ACF2/Top Secret, APF/LNKLST, LPA, PPT understanding of STIG/hardening concepts.
  • Demonstrated dump/abend analysis (IPCS, SLIP) and performance troubleshooting using SMF/RMF and toolspecific diagnostics.

Preferred / Nice to Have

  • Automation with z/OSMF Workflows, REXX, Ansible for z/OS, Zowe CLI.
  • CI/CD exposure for mainframe artifacts (Endevor/ISPW, UCD, Jenkins/Git).
  • Certificates/crypto (ATTLS, ICSF, SAF keyrings).
  • Prior experience with any of: Vanguard (security), Rocket (utilities/automation), LRS (output management), SAS/MXG, SDS, Syncsort (Sort/ETL), Mackinney (utilities), 21st Century (performance/ops tools).
