Job Description

A Mainframe Assembler Developer's job description involvesdesigning, developing, testing, and maintaining applications on mainframe systems using the Assembler language. Key responsibilities include collaborating with other IT staff and clients, analyzing user requirements, writing and debugging code, preparing test plans, and providing documentation. This role often requires experience with other mainframe technologies like JCL, COBOL, DB2, IMS DB, CICS, VSAM, and a strong understanding of theSystem Development Life Cycle(SDLC).

Primary duties and responsibilities

  • Analyze user requirements and translate them into technical specifications.
  • Develop, maintain, and optimize mainframe applications usingAssembler, JCL, and potentially COBOL.
  • Prepare unit and integration test plans and perform testing in cooperation with clients and other IT personnel.
  • Conduct problem analysis and propose solutions for technical and application issues.
  • Participate in all phases of theSystem Development Life Cycle, including design and documentation.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align software solutions with business goals.
  • Perform code reviews to ensure adherence to coding standards.
  • Provide end-user support and training, and create operational documentation.
  • Mentor less experienced programmers and serve as a technical resource for complex issues.
  • Participate in on-call rotations for production support as needed.

Required skills and qualifications

  • Proven experience as a Mainframe Assembler Developer or in a similar mainframe programming role.
  • Expert knowledge of Mainframe Assembler programming.
  • Experience with other mainframe technologies such asJCL,COBOL,DB2,IMS DB,CICS, andVSAM.
  • Familiarity with the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good communication skills (both written and verbal).
  • Experience in reverse engineering mainframe applications can be a plus.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field is often required.
