About The Role
The Linux System Administrator at DefinitionIT will play a crucial role in providing hands-on support for our clients Linux server environments. This part-time contractor position offers an opportunity to work remotely, supporting clients during Canada EST business hours with flexibility for after-hours support as needed. The role is designed for professionals with 4 to 7 years of experience in Linux administration who are capable of managing production environments independently. The ideal candidate will possess a solid understanding of Linux OS, networking, security practices, and troubleshooting techniques. Exposure to AWS cloud services is considered an added advantage, enabling the administrator to support hybrid cloud environments effectively. This engagement is capped at 20 hours per month, billed strictly based on actual support hours, making it an ideal opportunity for experienced Linux administrators seeking flexible, part-time work.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of 4 to 7 years of hands-on experience in Linux system administration. Demonstrated expertise in managing Linux distributions such as RHEL, CentOS, or Ubuntu is essential. Strong knowledge of Linux filesystems, permissions, networking, and troubleshooting is required. Experience with SSL/TLS, encryption, backup strategies, and monitoring tools is necessary to support secure and reliable server operations. The candidate should have a proven track record of supporting production environments independently, demonstrating excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Effective communication skills and the ability to maintain comprehensive documentation are vital for success in this role. Familiarity with scripting languages and automation tools is a plus, as is experience supporting high-availability systems and disaster recovery procedures.
Responsibilities
- Install, configure, maintain, and patch Linux servers (RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu) to ensure optimal performance and security.
- Perform routine health checks and ensure servers meet operational and security standards.
- Configure and manage mount points, file systems, and disk utilization to optimize storage resources.
- Establish and maintain local repositories; manage OS patching and package deployments efficiently.
- Configure and administer web servers, ensuring high availability and performance.
- Implement SSL certificates, server/disk encryption, and Linux hardening best practices to secure server environments.
- Administer user accounts, permissions, sudo access, and access controls to maintain system security.
- Support data migrations with minimal disruption, ensuring data integrity and consistency.
- Collaborate with backup teams to implement and test backup and recovery strategies, ensuring data safety.
- Monitor system health and performance metrics proactively, resolving incidents promptly to minimize downtime.
- Support capacity planning and scalability initiatives to accommodate future growth.
- Provide technical support during deployments and troubleshooting application-related issues.
- Maintain operational documentation and runbooks to facilitate knowledge sharing and operational consistency.
