About this role:

Wells Fargo is seeking a Lead Software Engineer in Middleware Engineering Team. This Team is responsible for Engineering of Messaging Solutions, Provisioning and builds, Engineering readiness, automation of IBM MQ, Confluent Kafka and Solace platform.


In this role, you will:

  • Lead complex technology initiatives including those that are companywide with broad impact
  • Act as a key participant in developing standards and companywide best practices for engineering complex and large-scale technology solutions for technology engineering disciplines
  • Design, code, test, debug, and document for projects and programs
  • Review and analyze complex, large-scale technology solutions for tactical and strategic business objectives, enterprise technological environment, and technical challenges that require in-depth evaluation of multiple factors, including intangibles or unprecedented technical factors
  • Make decisions in developing standard and companywide best practices for engineering and technology solutions requiring understanding of industry best practices and new technologies, influencing and leading technology team to meet deliverables and drive new initiatives
  • Collaborate and consult with key technical experts, senior technology team, and external industry groups to resolve complex technical issues and achieve goals
  • Lead projects, teams, or serve as a peer mentor

Required Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of Software Engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education

Desired Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of software development engineering experience
  • 10+ years of Proficiency in programming languages such as Full stack Java, Python, Ansible, and experience with relevant frameworks and libraries
  • 6+ years of Solid understanding of CI CD Pipeline, Microservices Architecture, and API integrations, OCP
  • 4+ years of Strong expertise in Front-end technologies like React or Angular.
  • Kafka internals & design: brokers, partitions, leaders/followers, ISR, controller quorum/KRaft, retention, compaction.
  • Kafka Connect ecosystem: Kafka Connect distributed mode, transforms (SMTs), connector tuning, CDC with Debezium, sink/source patterns.
  • Capacity planning: throughput modeling (MB/s, Messages/s), partition count estimation, retention/compaction storage sizing.
  • Containerization & Orchestration: Docker, Kubernetes (Strimzi/Confluent Operator), Helm node/pod sizing storage classes.
  • Producers/Consumers mastery: batching, acks, retries, idempotent producers, transactions (EOS), consumer groups, rebalancing strategies (Range/Sticky/Cooperative).
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and mentor junior engineers

Job Expectations:

  • Advanced coding or scripting skills specifically around automation
  • Expert knowledge and understanding of technologies related to infrastructure engineering (Infrastructure as code IAC)
  • Ability to help remediate tough technical Engineering and Support issues
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of team on multiple overlapping projects
  • Ability to operate effectively in a geographically dispersed organization
  • Customer focused, service-oriented attitude
  • Proven skills analyzing and trouble-shooting complex systems configurations
