About The Role
As the Lead Mechanical Engineer for Mobile Manipulator (MoMa) Design, you will define the global mechanical architecture of our flagship robot. You will make the definitive decisions on structural integrity, dynamic stability, and the overall kinematic configuration required for general-purpose construction tasks. You will bridge the gap between abstract functional requirements and mass-manufacturable hardware, leading a team of engineers to build rugged, precise, and highly capable mobile manipulators.
Key Responsibilities
System Architecture & Strategy:
- Architect the complete mechanical topology of the mobile manipulator, balancing reachability, payload capacity, and dynamic stability (e.g., tip-over margins on uneven terrain)
- Define and benchmark key performance metrics for general-purposeness, establishing the hardware limits for tool compatibility and workspace volumes
- Drive the high-level Design Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) and risk management strategy for the entire physical platform
Advanced Kinematics & Structural Engineering:
- Lead complex dynamic, kinematic, and structural analyses (FEA) to validate the safety and efficiency of the robot under heavy, variable payloads
- Oversee the real-to-virtual translation, ensuring perfect fidelity between the physical robot and its high-fidelity URDF/simulation models (inertial properties, joint limits, stiffness)
Manufacturing & Component Integration:
- Make final architectural decisions on actuator selection, custom transmission designs, and sensor integration topologies
- Establish strict standards for Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and manage highly complex tolerance stack-ups across the entire assembly
- Drive the transition from advanced prototypes to Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA), working closely with tier-1 suppliers and contract manufacturers
Leadership:
- Mentor and lead a team of mechanical engineers, setting a culture of rigorous engineering, rapid iteration, and uncompromising quality
Requirements
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Master's or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field
- 8+ years of deep experience designing complex robotic systems (mobile platforms, multi-axis arms, or heavy machinery)
- Expert-level proficiency in CAD software (Onshape) and advanced FEA tools (Ansys, Abaqus)
- Master of GD&T, tolerance stack-up analysis, and precision engineering principles
- Deep mathematical understanding of robot kinematics and dynamics
- Proven track record of taking complex electromechanical products from concept to mass production
Preferred Experiences
- Background in construction equipment, agricultural machinery, or industrial robotic arms
- Experience with large sheet metal structures and mobile equipment
