Main purpose of job:
Based in one of eight British High Commission offices across India, the following two positions: International Market Advisor Triage & Hub Performance and International Market Advisor Business Development, are exciting roles at the heart of the UK's Department for Business and Trade (DBT)s South Asia network. DBT promotes UK trade and investment globally, which is crucial for the UK's prosperity. Our team is dedicated to helping UK exporters significantly increase trade with India and four other countries in South Asia. This is an opportune time to join the team, following the signing of the UK-India Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) earlier this year and focus now being on the implementation of this agreement.
The Export Support Service (ESS) the UK's global trade support offer provides high-quality advice and market information to UK businesses seeking to export. The South Asia ESS Hub manages enquiries, market assessments, referrals and customer journeys across India and the wider region.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:
Postholder will be responsible for day-to-day service delivery, relationship management with UK companies and internal stakeholders. Success in these roles requires strong analytical capability, strategic judgement, excellent customer handling and confident engagement with senior colleagues across the British High Commission, DBT South Asia leadership, other UK missions, and headquarters, The general responsibilities for both roles include:
- Increase the value of UK exports by supporting UK SMEs to make informed decisions on market entry to South Asia markets;
- Providing tailored advice to UK SMEs, helping them identify their route to market, their market entry needs, flagging market barriers, and advising on options for making progress;
- Support UK SMEs to establish effective export strategies and if needed, assist them in sourcing additional support through an Overseas Referral Network, ensuring regular follow up to remain a key player in their client's export journey, tracking the service delivery and identify if further help is needed;
- Work proactively to build demand within the local market, seeking out export opportunities and tenders, and identifying and building relationships with major local businesses and importers;
- Update and share market collateral so that UK SMEs have access to the best market data to inform their exporting decisions.
- Ensure appropriate export account management is followed and businesses are linked into the UK International Trade Adviser network.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of all the markets in the South Asia region, working closely with Posts and directing business to opportunities not just in the primary market.
- Maintain and periodically update ESS factsheets and guidance products (e.g. via Canva), ensuring accuracy, accessibility and alignment with UK priorities.
- Play a key role in ensuring South Asia is embedded in global ESS activities such as International Trade Week, global reporting cycles, and emerging priority initiatives.
- Work with headquarters, ESS global teams and other regional hubs to develop best practice and improve the overall service.
In addition, each of the roles listed above has its own specific requirements, which are:
International Market Advisor Triage & Hub Performance
- Focus on growing and managing the pipeline of business enquiries, working closely with our UK-based International Trade Advisors, also be responsible for budget and strategic performance oversight.
- Oversee allocation, tracking and follow-up of all SME enquiries ensuring accurate and timely recording of activity in Zendesk and any related customer relationship management (CRM) systems.
- Manage follow-up actions, customer complaints and cases requiring escalation.
- Manage ESS budgets for South Asia/India, including travel & subsistence, learning & development, marketing and digital tools.
- Lead annual financial planning and forecasting, working with finance teams and headquarters.
- Lead the development, deployment and analysis of customer satisfaction (CSAT) tools to capture actionable insights and drive service improvements.
International Market Advisor Business Development
- Focus on relationship managing pan-South Asia government, small business industry organisation and distributor groups including through management of the Export Support Directory.
- Develop relationships with government, industry and distributor networks across India and South Asia to support the identification of opportunities for UK industry.
- Lead strategic relationship management of private-sector consultants in South Asia, ensuring high-quality advice and timely delivery to UK companies.
- Identify sector and geographic capability gaps, adding new consultants to meet demand from SMEs and corporates.
- Act as the regional system owner for the Export Support Directory ensuring accuracy, usability and continuous improvement.

Essential Skills:
- Education Qualification: Graduate/postgraduate (Candidates without the required educational qualifications but with exceptional practical experience will be considered)
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant commercial/business/government experience
- Strong understanding of UK business needs and UK exporting.
- Demonstrated analytical capability and experience producing reports for senior audiences.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
- Proven ability to manage stakeholders across multiple teams and external partners.
- Ability to work autonomously and take informed decisions at pace.
