Job Description — Instrumentation Engineer (Offshore)

Role summary
Lead instrumentation engineering activities for offshore projects, ensuring safe, compliant, and timely delivery of instrument systems from FEED/detail design through hook-up, commissioning and handover.
Key responsibilities
- Develop, review and approve instrumentation deliverables: instrument datasheets, I/O lists, loop diagrams, P&IDs, Hook-up drawings, cable schedules, termination details.
- Specify, select and validate field instruments, analyzers, valves, transmitters, RTDs/thermocouples, flow meters, level gauges and explosion-proof equipment for offshore use.
- Prepare and review instrument cause-and-effect, interlock and shutdown logic with safety instrumented systems (SIS) interfaces.
- Coordinate instrument control system architecture, DCS/PLC/SCADA integration, marshalling, and I/O allocation.
- Define cabling, junction boxes, Gland plate and earthing/lighting protection requirements for marine/offshore installation.
- Support FAT, SAT, loop checking, pre-commissioning and commissioning activities offshore and onshore; troubleshoot instrument and control system issues during commissioning.
- Ensure compliance with relevant standards and codes (IEC, ISA, API, NORSOK, ATEX/IECEx) and company HSE and quality procedures.
- Interface with disciplines (process, mechanical, electrical, subsea, topsides), vendors, subcontractors and client representatives.
- Produce technical reports, material take-offs (MTOs), procurement specifications and participate in vendor evaluation.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to project schedules, budgets and risk registers.
Qualifications & skills
- Bachelor's degree in Instrumentation/Control Engineering or equivalent.
- 8–14 years experience in instrumentation engineering within the oil & gas / offshore sector (topsides and/or subsea).
- Proven offshore experience (installation/commissioning/maintenance) is mandatory.
- Strong knowledge of DCS/PLC/SCADA systems, SIS, fieldbus (HART, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, Profibus) and industrial networks.
- Familiarity with hazardous area classification, marine standards, and offshore environmental constraints.
- Experience with engineering tools: P&ID/3D modeling (AutoCAD/SmartPlant/PDMS/OpenPlant), Instrument database tools, MS Office.
- Good documentation, vendor management and technical specification writing skills.
- Effective communication, client-facing experience and ability to travel offshore.
