Job Description

Job Title

Infrastructure Engineer (Linux/Puppet)

Job Description

So who are we

IG is a FTSE 100 fintech operating across five continents, serving over 1.3m customers and handling billions of dollars in transactions – built on scale, trust, and proof. We didn't pivot to innovation; it's how we've always operated. What that means for the people who work here is real: genuinely complex problems to solve, the technology and resources to tackle them properly, and the kind of scope that's rare in established businesses.

The bar is high – bring a curious and forward-thinking mindset and we'll give you the platform to define what comes next. Join us at IG – the future gets built here.

Your role in the Team

Ready to be the infrastructure hero our trading platforms need

The Delivery Engineering team is where infrastructure magic happens! We're a lean, focused team of 5 engineers who keep the foundational technology running that powers IG Group's global trading platforms. Think of us as the backbone that makes everything else possible – from on-premises Linux infrastructure to configuration management, web delivery systems, and slick self-service automation that makes developers lives easier.

As a Platform Delivery Engineer, you'll be working with cutting-edge Linux systems, infrastructure-as-code practices, and a diverse toolkit of automation solutions. This isn't just maintaining systems – it's about continuously improving them, making them more reliable, more secure, and easier for everyone to use. You'll get to work on hands-on technical challenges, build automation that actually solves problems, and drive modernization initiatives that take our infrastructure from good to great.

If you love solving complex problems and want your work to have real impact, this could be your perfect fit!

What you'll do

  • Build and maintain awesome Puppet 7 modules that keep our servers humming and applications running smoothly
  • Create automation pipelines that eliminate boring manual work and give teams superpowers through self-service
  • Own our web delivery infrastructure – Apache HTTPD, Nginx, F5 load balancers, and Akamai CDN – making sure traders worldwide get lightning-fast access
  • Drive infrastructure modernization – we're talking OS migrations, tooling upgrades, and technical transformations that matter
  • Be the troubleshooting guru when complex issues pop up across our infrastructure stack
  • Partner with Platform Managers and development teams to understand what they need and deliver solutions that work
  • Manage the complete software lifecycle for our diverse application stack – from packages built from source to security patches, feature updates for open-source components, and making sense of legacy dependencies
  • Keep our RPM packages organized and accessible through Artifactory
  • Implement monitoring and observability with OpenTelemetry, Grafana, and Honeycomb so we know what's happening before problems occur

What you'll need

Experience Level: 5+ years in Linux systems administration and infrastructure automation

Core Technical Requirements

  • Strong Linux systems administration experience (Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9, Rocky Linux 9, or similar) including systemd, SELinux, and security hardening
  • Puppet 7 expertise – writing and maintaining modules following role/profile/module patterns with Hiera (this is essential!)
  • Web infrastructure management with Apache HTTPD or Nginx, including SSL/TLS certificate lifecycle management
  • Load balancing experience with F5 or similar enterprise solutions
  • CI/CD pipeline development with GitLab CI/CD (preferred) or Jenkins
  • RPM package management and building, with repository administration experience
  • Strong Scripting in Bash and Python for automation tasks
  • Network fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, troubleshooting) and security awareness (PCI DSS knowledge is a plus)
  • Experience managing software lifecycle across diverse stacks – security patching, dependency management, and handling legacy systems

Nice to Have

  • CDN experience (Akamai is a bonus!)
  • Container orchestration with Nomad or Docker
  • HAProxy or other proxy technologies
  • Observability tools like Open Telemetry, Grafana, Honeycomb
  • Tomcat or Java application server management

What Makes You Stand Out

You're a systematic trouble-shooter who digs deep to find root causes, not just symptoms. You've successfully modernized legacy infrastructure while keeping systems stable. You build automation that teams actually want to use and document your work clearly. You're comfortable with inherited systems that have incomplete documentation – you see them as opportunities to understand, document, and improve.

Security and compliance aren't afterthoughts for you – you've worked with vulnerability management, certificate lifecycle, and frameworks like PCI DSS. You work well with cross-functional teams and share knowledge effectively.

Your Vibe Matches Ours

You've got solid Linux and automation skills, and you're comfortable jumping between hands-on work and strategic thinking. You love writing quality code, documenting your work, and building things that last. Complex technical puzzles energize you, and you take pride in infrastructure that just works. You can balance quick fixes when needed with building for long-term excellence.
