Position Overview
INAI, IIIT Hyderabad, an Applied Research Centre in Smart Mobility is seeking a Senior Technical Lead / Technical Manager to provide deep technical leadership for an academically anchored, applied R&D program focused on real-world mobility challenges and societal impact. This role is designed for highly experienced technologistssuch as senior industry professionals, retired or late-career engineers, or seasoned researcherswho are motivated to contribute to meaningful, deployment-oriented research while mentoring the next generation of engineers and researchers.
The Technical Lead will work closely with the Head, INAI to shape the technical direction of the program and will independently own defined technical and research work packages. The role combines hands-on system design and prototyping with research leadership, mentorship, and contribution to high-quality scholarly and applied outputs.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Serve as Technical Lead for one or more applied research streams, contributing to the overall technical vision, system architecture, and research methodology of the project.
- Provide hands-on leadership for software-centric R&D activities, including system design, implementation, integration, and evaluation.
- Design, develop, and validate research prototypes, platforms, or end-to-end systems aligned with smart mobility and applied research objectives.
- Independently plan and execute technical work packages, including defining milestones, managing technical risks, and ensuring timely delivery of outcomes.
- Collaborate closely with the Principal Investigator on research planning, technical reviews, milestone definition, and progress assessment.
- Contribute substantively to research outputs such as peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, white papers, open-source releases, and grant deliverables.
- Establish and promote ethical, reproducible, and responsible research practices, particularly for technologies with public-facing and societal implications.
- Mentor research scholars, project engineers, and junior investigators, providing guidance on both technical depth and research rigor.
- Support dissemination activities including seminars, workshops, demonstrations, technical talks, and academic or policy-facing presentations.
Required Qualifications
- PhD in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline; exceptional Master's degree holders with substantial industry and research experience will also be considered.
- Extensive hands-on experience in building and leading software systems, platforms, or applied technology research initiatives.
- Demonstrated ability to independently lead research-oriented or technically complex projects from concept to delivery.
- Prior experience contributing to academic research, applied R&D programs, or externally funded projects.
- Strong record of producing high-quality technical documentation, research reports, system designs, or peer-reviewed publications.
Desirable Experience
- Prior role as a Technical Lead, Principal Engineer, Research Scientist, or equivalent senior technical position.
- Experience working in socially relevant or public-interest domains such as smart mobility, transportation systems, healthcare, sustainability, governance, education, or digital public infrastructure.
- Familiarity with interdisciplinary research environments and academiaindustry or academiagovernment collaborations.
- Demonstrated experience mentoring students, early-career researchers, or junior engineers in research or applied settings.
