Job Description

Company Description

Madras Entertainment Factory (MEF) is a film production company focused on developing original, high-impact stories with a global outlook. MEF works across cultures and languages, creating projects that are rooted in strong storytelling, psychological depth, and cinematic discipline. The company collaborates closely with writers, directors, and technicians to build films that are ambitious, grounded, and execution-driven. At its core, MEF values clarity of vision, creative integrity, and long-term storytelling impact over trend-chasing or surface-level content.

Role Description

Madras Entertainment Factory is seeking a Horror / Psychological Thriller Writer for a contract-based role on a feature film currently in structured development.

This is a writer collaboration role, not an open-ended creative exercise. The film has a defined vision, tone, and narrative framework, and the selected writer will work closely with the producer and creative lead to develop a feature-length screenplay within that structure.

The writer will be responsible for expanding existing story materials into a cohesive script, developing layered characters, shaping tension through behavior and atmosphere, and refining drafts through focused revisions. The role requires comfort with restraint, ambiguity, and psychological storytelling rather than conventional horror tropes.

This is a hybrid role based in Chennai, with flexibility for remote work where appropriate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop a feature-length screenplay based on provided story documents and direction
  • Build suspense and unease through character, pacing, and structure
  • Write grounded, natural dialogue with minimal exposition
  • Collaborate closely with the producer and director during development and rewrites
  • Conduct research as needed to support authenticity and tone
  • Deliver drafts and revisions within agreed timelines

Qualifications

  • Strong writing ability in the horror or psychological thriller space
  • Solid understanding of story structure, character arcs, and pacing
  • Experience writing screenplays or similar long-form narrative work
  • Familiarity with Indian cinema & tribal cultures
  • Ability to take direction and work within a defined creative framework
  • Comfortable with revisions and collaborative development
  • Clear communication and professional reliability

Preferred

  • Experience in feature films, series, or long-form scripted projects
  • Background in restrained, atmospheric, or psychological narratives
  • Ability to use various tools (Google, Microsoft, Adobe, etc.)
