Job Description

The Role

To provide person-centred care to all patients undergoing surgical intervention in the Day Surgery Unit. This will be carried out in a safe and professional manner ensuring a high quality of service provision by a team of specialised staff.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

We have one part-time post available for 24 hours

Base location - Vale of Leven Surgical Day Bed Unit

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will support the Registered Practitioner in delivering high-quality pre-, intra- and post-operative care, tailored to the individual needs of patients undergoing surgical procedures. Care will be delivered in line with agreed care plans, standard operating procedures and local protocols to ensure safe and effective outcomes. You will be expected to promptly report any concerns or changes in a patient's condition to the Registered Practitioner, for example during patient movement or when removing equipment such as diathermy pads.

Working under the direction of a Registered Practitioner, you will assist with a range of patient care activities including personal hygiene, nutrition and hydration, tissue viability and continence care, escalating any concerns as appropriate. You will also utilise your knowledge of routine and specialist procedures, such as specimen and blood collection, to ensure specimens are correctly prepared, documented and dispatched in line with local policy. This includes undertaking required checks alongside a Registered Practitioner in accordance with specimen handling procedures.

You will be responsible for cleaning, checking and preparing specialist theatre and endoscopy equipment, ensuring compliance with infection control standards and patient safety requirements, and reporting any faults or discrepancies. Following a period of induction, you will be expected to organise and prioritise your own workload from a delegated list of duties. This will include preparing the clinical area, checking equipment, organising instruments, linen, drapes and trolleys, and ensuring everything is ready in advance of procedures. Any issues identified should be escalated appropriately, and you will support contingency planning where required to maintain service delivery.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

The post-holder will be required to undergo a period of induction and :-

  • Completion of In-House training programme
  • Understands and complies with HCSW mandatory induction standards and code of conduct
  • Obtain knowledge, new skills and keep updated by attending relevant study days, practical training and teaching sessions
  • Develop an awareness and understanding of policies and practices e.g. Accountable items SOP, Prevention and control of infection, Health and Safety and BLS.
  • To be able to understand and use a variety of perioperative documentation accurately following induction and on the job training.
  • To acquire through experience and on the job training a broad range of technical skills in checking and troubleshooting perioperative equipment and machinery which is used on a daily basis.
  • Be enthusiastic, have excellent communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Effective written and verbal communication, literacy numeracy and IT skills are desirable.
  • The post-holder is expected to achieve a range of core transferrable skills to undertake activities within different theatre specialities. This level of knowledge is expected to be achieved within a three to six month period.
  • The post-holder may be required to develop an enhanced skill level within a designated speciality. This is expected to be achieved within or up to a 12 month period. The post-holder may be required to work in more than one speciality
  • Knowledge of locations of stock items. An awareness of and familiarity of a range of items commonly used is desirable. Enhanced knowledge of items within own specialty
  • Good physical and dexterity skills.

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part-time working hours will be reduced on a pro-rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
